Hi Jimbo and Gang,

I'm not overly fond of DBM, but I like DBA and HOTT a lot!

Hi Maksim (and everyone else)
Talking about HOTT, reminded me of a project that I worked on when HOTT first came out, a Techno Dwarf Army
From the following articles on my website:
http://www.ifelix.co.uk/art4.html
HORDES OF THE THINGS
HOTT already caters for the Techno-Dwarf with element definitions which cover most aspects of this medieval technology. Airboats covers various machines, whilst Flyers could encompass Leonardo's flying machines. Use Behemoths for those armoured landships and other machines of war. Artillery can cater for bombards and cannons, and for the handgunners use Shooters.

Very cool list, Jimbo!

*** Are they all 28mm scale miniatures? ***

Quote (Jimbo @ 15 Feb. 2006 (20:43))
The following army list is only an idea of what a HOTT Techno-Dwarf army should be, please change at will and according to taste.

HOTT TECHNO DWARF
Behemoth General (armoured landship) @ 4 AP
Artillery (dwarven cannon) @ 3 AP
Shooters (dwarfs with arquebus) @ 2 AP
Blades (dwarfs with axe or warhammer) @ 2 AP
Flyers (dwarf mini helicopters) @ 2 AP

Alternatives: Airboat (dwarven airship) @ 3 AP, or Sneakers (party of dwarf adventurers) @ 3 AP

Check the original article for background information on technical innovation by Dwarfs.

I like it.

*** Have you ever played HOTT with this army? ***

Our local HOTT cmapaign will be delayed for another few weeks. The host is upgrading his computer and wanted to wait to start until he has new computer capabilities.

I'm still having thoughts over which army I should bring. I'm thinking about undead, dwarves or elves at the moment.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

We've been playing a series of HOTT games between British colonials and mythical Arabs:

Brits have:

Lots of shooters!
Old Armoured car as hero.
Old female Tank as behemoth
Two sopworth camels as flyers
One priest as cleric.
Lancers as knights
Dragoons as riders.

Arabs have:
Lots of horde.
Dervishes as warband.
Heroes including a genie.
Carrion as flyers
Magicians.
Beasts.

I haven't had much luck with bow or shooters.

Sounds cool. Horde can be a regenerating mess. You almost have to corner their entry point to defeat them.

Magicians never seem to do much for me. My dice rolling always fails to allow them to ensorcel heroes.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Shooters do have problems against heavy infantry (unless you are in difficult ground), especially blades.

Hoever, shooters are also my favourite type! Good factors against everything and they can attack without danger of a negative outcome in your turn and the enemies :)

In fact they are so good we use the recommended rules on 'The Stonghold' site, where they only have 200p movement and warband have 300p movement.

Remember to stick something behind the unit you are shooting at so it can't retire (if you can of course!) - that way you only need to beat it rather than doubling it :)

I'm making an army with magicians to try them out. My opponent doesn't like using them, but I think they have potential :)

It was a planned army and I was going to do it in 15mm.

I purchased a whole lot of 15mm miniatures at this time, but very few bits ever got painted.

The article was something I wrote and the HOTT aspect was something I added to the end.
*** Have you ever played HOTT with this army? ***

Can't remember if I ever did, I do remember playing HOTT with cardboard bases trying out different armies, but it is years and years since I played HOTT.

Cool. The HOTT combat resolution tables are very different from DBA.

Bow has a different use in DBA than shooter's do in HOTT.

Blade seems really good unless your opponent has some type of cavalry.

And knights are pretty weak in HOTT, but good in DBA.

There is no pike in HOTT, but it is pretty formable in DBA.

I'll have to take a look at the optional Stronghold rules.

I've heard that the optimal way to do this is with a super unit such as a deity or a dragon that can fly over enemy units.

My cavalry never seem to do the job as they always seem to hit the end of the world... I mean the board! :D

I made an army with all spear and two magicians. It worked out very well, but the magicians didn't do a whole lot other than constantly push back enemy behemoths. Enemy heroes are generally several pips above magicians in die resolution factors so the odds of ensorcelling a hero are very low.

And... there's the running water rule, which makes it near impossible to ensorcel a hero.

I've switched back to using heros, but I get frustrated that it's not possible to have a foor hero in HOTT, only a Mounted hero.

Shabbat Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

OK.

The local gaming club I got involved with, MWSS (Miniature Wargaming Society of Sacramento), has bunch of Phil Barker fans so I've been playing a lot of DBA and HOTT.

Here's a link to the MWSS club:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/M_W_S/

There a rea lot of photos in the galleries that are nice including a number of DBA, DBM, and other historical games.

Shabbat Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

*** What is the general opinion about HOTT? ***

I purchased the rules out of curiosity and to me the movement rules seem overly complicated and, if I may add, rather badly worded. Now I'm not a native speaker but I'd still rate my understanding of written English as "4" on a scale from 1 to 5. ???

Hi Mojarn,

Well, it's a good game, with a horribly written set of rules. Most folks seem to agree with that appraisal of the game.

Most of the updates seem to primarily concern the wording of the rules rather than actual game play mechanics.

Once you understand the movement rules (easier to see than understand from reading), they aren't so bad... in fact, they work pretty well... Jervis might say elegantly.

English wasn't my first language either, but I would say it is my dominant language now... at least, I speak it more than any other language I know and... I rate my English comprehension as a 5 out of 5 and I STILL find Phil Barker's rules very confusing.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Guys,

I just got back from an interview for a local Arts and Culture magazine... they're interested in profiling the gaming community. It was pretty cool.

I dropped a few links to add into the article and Epicomms might be in the article.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
