They didn't pass on the cost savings though I'm sure.  Seem to remember them saying something about re forging the moulds so no short term savings could be offered.

I think the cost savings they were referring to were more to do with not getting sued by concerned parents who let little timmy eat a Lead-based model than any manufacturing savings... thus justifiably they can say no money was saved, just potential losses averted!  :;):

I've avoided this bee's nest for a while now but I have to admit, when I was a youngster I picked up Heroquest. ?In the box was a flyer for a free White Dwarf. ?Considering the only gaming store in my home town was for Comics and RPGs and vinyl kits this was extremely fascinating. ?It came with the same fold out poster that's in the current WHFB boxed game (only with Necromunda and Gorkamorka stuff added in). ?It was issue 0 and was totally free. ?I must've read it I dunno how many times. ?After that I saw things included like vehicle stat cards, free card buildings, bitz certificates, Skullz promotional stuff and anything else you can think of. ?All in random issues... not as some cheesy incentive for subscribing. ?I've learned over the years that people respond better when you do things for them just because. ?If you bundle a crappy LotR mini with a subscription people feel like they just bought the two together, and the sense of the gift is more or less lost. ?The other thing that burns me is that 1/3 of the magazine goes to a game/range that NOBODY plays. ?My LGS is pretty keen on this sort of thing and thankfully didn't lose a lot of money on it. ?BUT, there are more SG players (I would combine them and simply rotate the featured SG) than LotR any day of the week. ?Andy Chambers left for whatever reasons he left for but when he went, the thing that made fanatics was either dead or died soon thereafter. ?
I'm a member of the-waagh.com also and I've noticed something from reading the threads about similar matters. ?GW isn't going to turn their back on anything they've made, they've already done it. ?It's die-hard consumers that keep their product alive. ?SG get's 0 (goose egg) advertising, yet here I am on a thriving message board that is about their product. ?The game itself is swarming with life, but the support is coming from LGS that have the stuff and have found their way to e-commerce or from people on e-bay. ?Same for Orks... no new models for almost a decade = people that improvise. ?If I want a Trukk I go buy toys or military model kits or plasticard...but not that silly little thing GW tries to sell me. ?I am collecting Epic entirely from my LGS and e-bay with the exception of FW who I believe is an Epic/BFG player's best friend. ?Okay...rant off I have work to do...
EDIT:oh and the last part of the last statement was supposed to be "and the magazine that they ruined is only kept alive by the people (like me) who are loyal to the publication and subscribe

Eh, Lord of the Rings is surely going to be dropped as a 'core' system soon enough, it's down horribly in sales, and is regularly down to 7 pages per white dwarf apparently.

The doom of LOTR is the herald of the return of Epic I tell thee! ???

My nephew (who works at a GW store) told me that GW is already planning on dropping LotR as a core game. A replacement core game hasn't been determined yet.

I'll concede that Epic has always been fairly expensive. I never did buy the blisters of metal Marines since SM1 came with (what I thought at the time) a good number of plastic Marines. I remember thinking at the time that $20 US was a lot of money to pay for a CI or Hellbore. (Of course, I wasn't earning as much then as I do now.) I also remember that the price for a Trygon blister went from $5.99 for two to $5.99 for one. I'm sure all of us veterans remember well the price hike when E40k was released. Now look at the prices.

As for WD... I became a faithful reader when AT was released, about issue #115. Wow, what a magazine it was back then! I only played Epic and Space Hulk, but I would read and reread just about everything. Shortly thereafter I decided to subscribe and did so faithfully until the point where there might be an Epic article in an issue. I decided it wasn't worth my money to subscribe anymore. I started reading WD again when E40k was released, but since I ended up hating the game, I stopped reading WD all together and haven't read a single issue since then. Since I don't play Warhammer or 40k, I really don't feel like I've missed anything.

Yes, but Manticores were still overpriced then just as they are now - and now they are cheaper :)

Also in my day I could read a white dwarf for days!

Now I admit I'm better at reading.

Happen a lot here, we are a silly lot.  :p

As for the Core Game Shuffle, yes, LotR was doomed to be a core game only so long. GW tends to drop games from Core status if their sales drop beyond a point.

Maybe they will make a new core game that is not a dog. We shall see.

Looking at the current specialist games section there isn't anything that strikes me as being a favourite contender to become a core game.  I suspect that LOTR will drop to a specialist game soon.

Each of the main specialists games has had it's day as the third core game, each has passed on to slow lingering deaths due to re-releases or lack of support.  So what next?

Does this mean that GW will have to be original and come up with something new?

Or will they just release a new version of one of the old classics?

I'd like them to redo the old games like Space Hulk, Space Cursade, Hero Quest, Man O War and give them presidence  over a new third core game.

I know they don't have the money generating scope of collecting complete armies but a limited run of say Space Hulk would be awesome and really well received I'd have thought.
