Interesting post Primarch. I suppose if the shops disappeared entirely then gaming clubs would probably fill in the gaps. Hell, GW itself could start clubs that only exist for getting people together and gaming using their tables, terrain, etc. They could also have a computer there so people could order off the net if they don't have internet at home. :D

Hi!

I agree with you Falesh. I think gaming groups, formal and informal would fill the void and the internet would server as information and hookup access.

Maksim, good summary. In the end if the player is dissatisfied he seeks satisfaction elsewhere.

Hi!

Why thank you gents, much appreciated!

I dont know where exactly I picked up the habit, but I view an e-mail communication like a regular conversation where there is a greating before talking begins.

Maksim's right about the "NYC mode". I tend to not want to use it much, since its confrontational, arrogant, synical and downright rude. I mainly use it to convey to an online "opponent" that I got "bite" as well as "bark".  :;):

Of course, one of the reasons I like these forums is that I dont have a frequent need to do this. Thats why I post so much here. Heck, I post more here than I do on the netepic group list...  :D

Talking to people here reminds me of the days I retailed and "talked shop" with good friends. I would have to think real hard to think of anyone here that "irks" me, everyone is so easy to talk to and amicable.

Those that weren't I "bit" real good and havent come back....  :;):

Hi all,
here in Malta 50% of the games model stores are progressively reducing GW stocks and barely replenishing. Which means one out of the two such stores, of course....

Oh,and Primarch, could we please have a brief example of this NYC mode, with the same translated in polite mode? I'm not sure I understood the difference, and am intrigued!

Hi!

Oh, I havent used that here for quite a long time, a year of two actually.

The reference is that native New Yorkers are supposed to be pretty nasty when pressed and impolite. Its a stereotype, but it has some truth. It sorta like the difference on how people treat each other in a rural community versus a metropolitan area. In NY its just more extreme.

When someone gets "snooty" with me, I let it rip... hard. I'll never purposefully disrespect anyone, but if you cross the line with me, I WILL fry you. :;):

No worries though, I am MUCH more laid back since I live in Puerto Rico compared to living in the continental US. Heck, I dont even get worked up about epic 40k anymore... :;): :p

Hi!

No problem, regionalisms need to be explained in ncontext to understand them. Iget a lot of that where I live too.

Something from Andy Chambers (now a Blizzard lacky).

It's been rather painful to contrast this with the difficulties Games Workshop has found itself in over the last year as several of my friends there have been forced to move on. I can only hope that this creates a realization that an expansive retail organisation and integrated manufacturing capacity is no substitute for originality and diversity in the modern market. Time will tell but I'm sure GW will endure, there's still plenty of cool stuff they can do and some seriously skilled individuals there that can do it.

Diversity? Nah, focus everything on the core games!

Hi

Here in the UK we have never had the culture of gaming shops where you could play, in the main as the retail outlets were way too small.

Even tables in GW stores is a relatively new phenomena, and now we have GW Gaming Centres, which are stores with quite a few tables.

We do have lots of clubs and lots of people who play with a small group of friends.

I got into GW through their diversity of games. I started with HeroQuest, then moved onto their other games, Space Hulk, 40K, FB, Space Marine, Blood Bowl, etc...

I believe that in the long run they will lose profits if they keep trying to specialise so much on the big couple of games at the expense of the high quality diversity of games represented by Specialist Games (also bringing back Space Hulk would help too).

I played many GW games, starting with HeroQuest, too.  I just think GW are fundamentally mistaken if they think that players were sticking to one or two games alone and in doing so ignoring 40k or Fantasy Battle.  I?m sure this was true of a few people, but I know more who played many games.  I think that if they ditch Specialist Games then they?re just throwing money away.  I?m not going back to buying 40k stuff.  I?ve played games that are actually good since my 40k days.  Maybe they could have shunted everyone into 40k or Fantasy Battle in the days where there was no substantial competition, but now there is.

I was saying about 12 years ago that the only thing that will stop GW from increasing prices is competition.  In the US they?re finally facing competition from another heavyweight in the form of Wizards of the Coast.  Good.  It should stop the ridiculous price hikes.  It wouldn?t surprise me if it doesn?t but they?re mad to continue them.  It might also make GW realise they have some good games in their locker and perhaps countenance the idea of staving off the competition by offering a decent product.  Radical idea, I know.

I live in York, UK, and When I was going to my local store to play many years ago (in the days of Rogue Trader) they had tables and alowed people to play their other games too like Space Hulk. It was somewhat small, but we could fit 2 or 3 games in at a time if I remember rightly. Maybe I was lucky with a good local shop though.

Hi!

Im my expereince well run stores a rare. I think I have only visited 3 across 15 states that I'd say were good and looked like they were in good financial condition.

Bad business people usually make all sorts of excuses for thier woes. This is endemic in the game shop business. Dont know why it is.

I have a small sample of knowledge, but most of the game store owners I know well got into it for their love of gaming and dont have much in the way of formal buisness qualifications
