I'm with Primarch. Jervis is a very good game designer, but he is way more interested in having fun than in winning. He has been well-known for losing since SM/TL days.

Having fun is more important than winning for me, too. Heck, these days, I'm so happy to be even playing a game of Epic, I really don't care whether I win or lose. ?

Agreed. It's probably a large component of what makes him such a good game designer.

In a word, well many words really, if you aren't having fun you should look into finding another hobby.
Tournment time, when I come out and judge (I rarely play in them) is a nightmare as most of the participants take it all too seriously. Makes judging a real pain.
I'd rather get together with some good friends, play a fun game, have some good laughs, victory on the battle being secondary.
Winning in gaming occurrs when you have FUN, if you don't have fun and you do obtain victory on the gaming table, I ask, just what then did you win?

Oh, yea funny story......
I played in a WRG tournament way back in the late 70s, my opponent got ahead in points on the battlefield and then hid in the bathroom for half an hour. My eyes rolled when the judge gave him the victory. (Time limit)
