Many things have come together to make me ponder some heavy questions:

Why do I game?
Do I game or just collect?
Why do I collect?
What would my collection be worth on ebay?
What do I get out of all this?
What am I doing out on the net?
What do I want from the net?
What do I give back?
Do I need games?

As you can imagine, as I have been thinking through all of these things, I have had some odd thoughts come up. I was thinking about what do I want and can I find what I want from a better form of expression?

I have found out some interesting things about myself and what goes on in the dafrca mind. You should spend some time asking yourself why you do what you do.

Hi Dafrca,

I'm curious...

*** How did you answer those questions? ***

*** What did you learn aout yourself? ***

*** What forms of expression do you find better than our miniatures hobby? ***

I'll ponder the questions and post after I've given the questions a good amount of thought.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Yep, but OTOH doing that is taking a terrible risk. I once did the mistake of digging too long and too deep. Kind of like the Dwarves in Khazad-dum. And I, too, found what I didn't want to find...  :L

They are inetresting and pertinent questions Daf. ?I too have had to ponder the whys and wherefore of my gaming, especially after I became a father.

Over the years my gaming has changed and been in many forms, from fantasy and Sci-fi to Historical throughout the ages. ?Now I find myself into more Pulp gaming and Victorian SciFi because its different to anything I've done before, expands my own repetoir of knowledge, and most importantly involves my children so that gaming is no longer a "Dad's own time" thing, but more of a family activity. ?It also helps them accept that there are things that they can play with, and things they cant.

I need to ask those questions about the net though - it turns all too easily into a time black hole wich I can ill afford.

I too would be very interested in your answers to your questions, and see if they match my own. ?Yours too Maksim, and see how they have changed in the last few months.

Tas :)

Well Maksim, to be honest I am not sure that I have all the answers. And I would be very unwilling to try and answer them for anyone else.

Why do we game and why do we collect? I am sure that these are two very different things. If you think about it, we could play EpicA or Netepic without a single mini. I could take a sheet of card stock, and cut small squares about the right size. Then write on them ?Russ 1/1? through ?Russ 1/10? and have my Russ company. You could cut a bunch of small squares and write ?Boyz? or ?Grotz? on them. But we do not just stop at the minis, we insist on specific releases. I want a company of Russ Mk. IIs.

Do we do it for the entertainment and joy of the game? Well do we need a particular game for that?

I do know I love collecting. I discovered that I care less about the games per say then about the collecting. Note I said collecting and not collections. I love my little toys, but I did not have the reaction I thought I would when I thought about selling off everything. When I imagined the ?void?of owning no more minis I realized, for me, it is less about the minis and more about the act of collecting.

Anyway, think about it, be honest and go beyond the first ?answer? that comes. Why are we doing this?

I do this because I enjoy it. ?I dont collect for the sake of it but to enjoy the realm created and learn just what went on in the old days at GW. ?I also love painting which is something of a relaxation.

I am proud of my miniatures and the rare ones I have found, which motivates me to search more and learn of what happens behind close doors. ?I have learnt much regarding epic and well what can I say but there are toys all over my flat. ?

Gaming, yes I do that but not enough. ?As a gamer at heart I love board games , computer games and for me this is the one thing I enjoy where is a mix of creativity, gaming, strategy and collecting. ?What more can I ask for.

One thing that sometimes spoil it? ?Childish flamer wars about a game or rule where something is always better than the other, this isnt fair, that isnt fair and you dont know what you are talking about kind of nonsense. ?I mean its a game, why on earth do people actually make the effort to spark these off? ?

Or maybe its me living on a different planet where I think everything should be calm and debatable without the stress and agressive natures that these flame wars generate....

Been modeling and gaming "forever" !  I like building and painting, it gives me great satisfaction, pleasure and it's fun !   With the phyiscal problems and "mid life crisis", I've been going thru over the past year+ (and it ain't with over yet !) ... the diversion and keeping my mind busy is a good thing !    As they say on TV - "Just Do iT !"  "Mine is not to reason why, just to Epic or Die !"

Hi Guys,

All of the questions come down to one big one for me:

QUESTION: "Why do I game?"

ANSWER: I game to meet new friends and preserve my relationships with good old ones. Gaming for me, is ultimately a way of relating to other people. It's a social activity. And that's what Epicomms is all about for me: friends.

Friends are people you can be true self with and friends give and take among another. That happens everyday here. I can't count how many times people have sent each other bitz for those "uncompleted projects" for nothing other than the pleasure of knowing they helped out. It's that sort of selfless giving that makes Epicomms a great community.

When times are hard for me, I come here for refuge and solace. When times are good, I like to share my good fortune here. At any old crazy time, I'm likely to share my often "fruitless" ideas and crazy projects here.

In short, Epicomms is my community and home.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Well, this is turning into a voyage of self discovery. I must admit that these questions intrigue me. I am not sure that I even have the answers for myself, but I have been thinking about them for the last few days.

Why do I game?
For me, I think that this is escapism. I have always been a huge fan of science fiction, and the same enthusiasm applies to GW. I like to retreat into a mythical reality. I like the 'what if' with it all. I often wish that I could apply this enthusiasm and knowledge to something actually useful in life!

Do I game or just collect?
I thought that I was a collector until recently. Now, I think that I game because I like tactical and strategic test, and I collect because I am caught up in the worlds. I dont need more minis, but I like to have them because it give more possibilities on the battlefields, and adds another small piece to the big picture of the fictional setting.

Why do I collect?
I collect to simply have. And, I must admit that I am worried that one day there will be no more minis. I collect so that I am able to field an entire force of tanks, if I ever want to.

What would my collection be worth on ebay?
All of it, or just Epic? I think that it would go for a fair ammount of money. I must have over 200-300 unopened blisters, at least 30 infantry sprues from each force. But, it would never be enough to persuade me to sell.

What do I get out of all this?
Escapism. I get to leave reality for a while and to emerse myself in something different. I get the buzz of discussions, and most importantly the thrill of designing a new force or background, working out the intricacies and how it should function in the field.

What am I doing out on the net?
I am not a social person. Even if I had a load of players near me, I would probably play the same two or three people and discuss things on the net. I am not interested in agruing the point of 'what is better', and the net allows me to not get involved in this kind of discussion.

What do I want from the net?
Good question. Inspiration and an ability to bounce ideas off other people and so to see them develop.

What do I give back?
I dont think that anyone gives back a lot, but the volume of people giving back a bit, combined with the fact that we dont actually need much from the web, makes it work.

Do I need games?
No. Without this place, and Epic, I would try a different game. Without different games, I would make my own. Without that, I would still throw ideas around. Epic and these forums make it easier, and better. They facilitate the process, and mean that I get more back from it.

Thanks.

Since dafrca first posed his questions, I've been giving them serious thought. As far as I'm concerned, it never hurts to be introspective every once in a while. So, without further ado:

Why do I game?

I game because I enjoy it. I've been playing wargames (not counting games like Stratego and Battleship) since I was 10 or 11 and over 30 years later, I'm still hooked. I enjoy recreating historic battles as well as playing fantasy and sci-fi games. I suppose there is an element of escapism. As I've gotten older, the social aspect has become increasingly important. My fondest gaming memories have as much to do with who was there and what occured, as they do with the game itself.

Do I game or just collect?

I do both, although lately I am more of a collector than player. Sometimes being a grown-up sucks!

Why do I collect?

Since I bought all of the army cards for SM2, my goal has been to be able to field at least one of every detachment/company for all of the armies that existed for SM2. I decided on that goal for two reasons: for the variety of being able to play any army and so that my opponent could field any army he desired by borrowing my minis if necessary. I'm not out to collect at least one of every epic mini ever released.

What would me collection be worth on ebay?

Who cares? Except for maybe a few minis here and there, it ain't for sale! ?:p

What do I get out of all of this?

Although gaming is only a hobby, it's a very important one for me. Also, wargames provide mental challenges, which I enjoy.

What am I doing out on the net?

Connecting with people who have similar interests as I and who I would never have met otherwise. It boggles my mind sometimes that I correspond with people as far away as Australia and New Zealand.

What do I want from the net?

At first it was to find new material for SM, but now I more interested in meeting other gamers.

What do I give back?

Probably not much, but it might be more than I think. If I had a digital camera, I would be contributing lots of pics of my collection. Not that my painting talent is in the same league as people like Tuffskull, but I am proud of the painting job I've done.

Do I need games?

Absolutely! I doesn't necessarily have to be Epic, but I do need games in general, whether it's Epic, Squad Leader, D&D or more pedestrian(I don't mean this as a condescending term) ?boardgames or cardgames, I need games of some sort to stimulate me mentally and for the social interaction.

I could go on for hours about gaming, but I'm keeping it relatively short for brevity's sake! ?:D ? I can honestly say that since I joined this forum, I have made many new friends. ?:)

Hi!

Why do I game?

Its an intellectual outlet for me. I need to use my brain with something other than my job. The strategy and thought involved in gaming provides that for me.

Do I game or just collect?

Currently is more collecting. Although I really think in my case "collecting" is not what I do, since I dont look for, or am I interested in rare models.

I really think "hording" is a better term for me since I look for "lots" of a model type just to "achieve" a certain number of "feel" for the army I have in mind.

Why do I collect?

In the particular case of epic it is purely egotistical. I want to have more epic than anybody.... PERIOD.

What would my collection be worth on ebay?

I have pondered this a lot. I'm not sure what the true value would be. I once made a conservative estimate of around 50k. What the truth is is any bodies guess.

Its a moot point for me as I would never sell it.

What do I get out of all this?

The knowledge that I habe more epic than any mortal should have.

What am I doing out on the net?

Currently, just being able to talk to people who share my interests in a laid back fun manner. Back when I started it was mainly a quest for knowledge on a whole slew of topics.

What do I want from the net?

Conversation. The culture of puerto rico is such that our sort of hobby is, at the very least, "strange" to people. Only through rh net I can express and listen regarding the expression of my hobby.

What do I give back?

I coordinate netepic. Keeping epic alive regardless of what the parent company does. Been doing it for over 8 years....

Do I need games?

Yes. They are an integral part of what i do with my liesure time as well as a part of who I am.

Primarch.
