Quote (MaksimSmelchak @ 08 2004 Oct.,16:51) | The idea is tempting, but I don't want to show up on his doorstep uninvited.
That's my own ethics telling me not to do so. | Those are good little ethics.
You have done enough, let time and him deside if we hear from him again.

Yes ... he's better off "dead" ... too bad ... I had a good trade deal with him too ...

Max, when you say not returned calls, you mean someone has picked up on the other end and said he would phone back or there has been no reply?

Hi Chris,
The answering machine is still his, but no calls are returned.
I haven't spoken with human beings at his place in some time.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi!
Caller ID, if there is someone there it is easy to avoid "unwanted" calls.....

I haven't spoken with human beings at his place in some time. | But that does not mean he is not hearing the messages. I had a friend who never answered his home phone. He felt that if you were someone he wanted to talk to, you knew his cell.
Sometimes I was at his place were he would let the phone ring, then later run the messages. It was his "style".
So I knew if I wanted to give him some info, say the time we were going to a movie, I would just leave a message. If I needed to talk to him, I called his cell.

Now if he was hurt or worse, others would have those. | Well, not quite. See, my e-mail adress is not known to any of my family, cept for my mother. And even she does not know the password at all.
That's my own ethics telling me not to do so. |
Well, Maksim, it's your money and your book... If I were you, after so many unsuccesful contacts I'd leave him one message on the machine - that I he has 24 hours to return my goods, and after this time I'd appear straight on his doorstep, whether he wanted this or not.
+++WARNING: LONG RANT BELOW+++
Once I had to do similar thing ("Listen up, b*****d, get your fat a** here and return me my CD's or I'll get to your place and not with a humanitary mission!") to an ex-friend who borrowed most of my computer game CD's and did not return them for THREE MONTHS (and he swore to return them in a period of one). I simply could not allow the collection to be lost. He was at my place within an hour.
At that moment he also swore that he returned me one computer games mag he has borrowed from me a while ago. I did not rememebr clearly, but three scrupulous searches later yielded me the answer that he still had it. Well, another phone, with a detailed description of the issue and it's cover, and a promise that if he does not return it, I'll tear his legs out of his butt (or at least something closely similar). Result? Half an hour later he is at my place with the magazine under his arm.
The guy was generally an idiot, he sometimes agreed for times of meeting that he knew he could not hold, and I was quite pi**ed off at the CD issue - he said he would be at my place at 10 AM. He wasn't. When I have phoned his mother two hours later, it came out that on Saturdays he never gets up before 11 AM. I asked him to be at my place at three PM. He wasn't. Next phone - he agreed for 5 PM. He wasn't. So I have turned the "rude mode" on, with positive results.
Once, I wanted to play Starcraft with him in Internet Cafe. I was covering the entire cost out of my cash, BTW. He just entered soem online chat and all I could get from him was "in a moment".
Well, did not have contact with him for about two years, and I cannot say I'm not glad of it.
Last time I heard anything about him was that he got to some hip-hop kind of people and began taking drugs.
+++RANT END+++

Was he living alone or with some of his family?
