This is something that I feel quite strongly about, and I am very against guess-weapons or anything where you guess the range. Partially, this is because I am useless at it! Officially however, it takes the control of the battle away from 'your guys' and gives you a direct control. Suddenly, your ability on the battlefield is not just about your planning and tactics, but about how well you can judge ranges - something that individual gunners would be trooubled with alone.

Agreed ! We never guess ranges, measure the range, look at the chart(s), + or - modifiers, roll the die(s) ... kill the bad guys ...

Even though I am fairly good at it, I have always disliked the guess-a-range type rules.
I think that the pre-measure is fine and agree that it seems to eliminate some of the contention I have seen in the "guess a range" disagreements.

Yeah, in my games of BFG we have begun using the experimental rules for Nova Cannon from the Annual, instead of the Bluebook guess-range rules, and they seems to work just fine....

Hi!
I think the reason it is often used is because it adds a level of tension or "unpredicatibility" to the game. Not knowing if you have range before you commit to an attack, etc.
Of course I think whatever "benefit" it may bring to the game is destroyed by the inevitable aguements and "shortcuts" to bypass this rule. Also, not everyone is good at "guesstimating" and its lousy to lose a game that you played well but could guess enough of those crucial distances to fire.
Besides, dont they have range finders in the 40k universe?

I concur whole-heartedly...guesstimation weapons annoy the hell of out me! We certainly allow premeasuring, but only after movement.
I once had a guy who gleefully exploited premeasuring, so that before he moved he would calculate evry angle, and permutation etc which really slowed things down and just annoyed everybody. Thus we allow a quick measurement to see if a unit will be in charge range etc but proper measuring usually afterwards as you allocate your fire. This still allows for the annoying "I cant believe that is 2 cm out of range!" groans. It does allow you to target someone else though (I guess your rangefinder tells you its out of range!)
Its not a strict rules regiment, just a playing ethos we have.

it's a game, I play for enjoyment, it's not a serious venture...

Hi!
Gamer attitude is of paramount importance. When I used to retail, by defualt, I played and interacted with many gamers like those described. Once I left retailing I realized that my free time was so precious that is was preferable to not game at all, than to game with people with petty little habits and attitudes.
The "construction" of your gaming group is even MORE vital than your choice of game. You can play your most favorite of games, but it will not be that great if the people you play with aren't as great as the game!
Gaming is about social interaction, with its own rules and regulations. In view they are more important that the game I choice to play.

I have been known to change games for this reason. A friend of mine got me into a great regular gaming club of about 80 guys and gals. I got into 3 new game systems so that I could participate each week. I made some great friends there which I still keep in touch with years later. In due course I moved away and returned to my other games (which I had never really left) and a much richer peron for being with that group and a more diverse gamer for trying new stuff.

Right on Tas!
While I've played many a game system in my heyday, I feel that the people I have gamed with are the true reason I love "x' game system or "y".
Epic has a very dear place in my heart because I played with a good group of people and we had loads of fun. I also was lucky enough (or did enough research) to find similar minded people in the many plaxes I moved too over the years. It enhanced my gaming experience as well as my knowledge about the games I like.
On the same vien thats why I dislike 40k for example, even in the so called glory days of Rogue trader, IMO, it attracted a very "bad-gamer" attitude. Of course the experiences are as vaired as the individuals, but the "right" people go a long way to make the "right" game.

I was part of a group of people who got together and played Uno once a month. The game was so-so but the time we had was a blast.
On the other hand I loved playing WH40k and still I sold all my models and have not played sense because of the nasty, petty people I met while playing.

I've genrally stayed with miniature games in 6mm scale whether microarmor, Car Wars, or sci-fi games like Epic.
I used to have a lot of 25mm fantasy figures before GW became big, but that was a long time ago.
The only non-6mms I have now are some 25mm Napoleonics I have because that's what my friends are playing.
I like board games a lot as well. I usually bring Guillotine and Puerto Rico to most gatherings.
I like to play RPGs, but it's hard to find a reliable and mature group.

I hear that dafrca, I did the same thing way back then. I had a rather large 40k collection and I dumped the whole thinkg because I couldn't stand the attitude of most 40k'ers I had run accross.

Maksim, this is the second time you mention the "Puerto Rico" game, I think I have seen it, but dont know what its about. Care to give my a brief summary?
