I agree: Casting quality back then was pretty bad so the pitted surfece isn't that uncommon. However I am still a bit worried about the air bubble in the mould that clearly shows in the tracks: I'd really think GW at least got that right back then.

Close-ups of the same track section on my model; which was purchased in a GW store more years ago than I like to consider.  *laugh*

It's the real, crappy, deal.

It's funny, though, I never knew they had a metal version of the tracks.

There's Termite < Mole < Hellbore.

The Hellbore had the plastic track assembly, the other two had metal transports.

These are pics of the Mole...

Hi!

Since I own a metric ton of epic stuff and I have vast experience with recast (having encountered through the years MANY people with the know how). I am 99.99% certain the piece is genuine.

In fact the fact that is DOES look crappy increases its legitimacy, not reduce it.

Believe me, I have run into casters that will make copes look EXACTLY or even BETTER than the real thing. Yes, there are people that are THAT good.

Your model looks like the multiple legit ones I have. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Thanks for all the advice guys, especially the pics (ta Chroma).  I feel suitable reassured that the Moles are in fact genuine, and just a product of Citadel's late 80s casting techniques.

I guess the second mold line must be a result of improperly cleaned masters.  Or perhaps they were just lay and made one of the molds from and existing production casting.  I guess that I'm so used to modern casting quality that I forget how bad it was 20 years ago.

I've emailed the seller to apologise for my prior (friendly) email.  I shall be keeping the models and paitning them very shortly.  Expect photos soon.

Yeah, I reckon thats a real mole too- i remember them being very badly cast :)

I'm in agreement that it's genuine. Some of the minis from the late 80's and early 90's had horrible mold lines.

Yes.
I've got some molded stuff from a guy (and was happy with it, I only paid for the lead). The casting was OK.

Then, i opened some old blister of the same army (the eldars i'm painting now), and i was a bit surprised: sometime the casting was worse (2 of my warp hunters have a 1-2mm difference between the 2 parts... Quite boring !).
I've also noticed that the US citadel castings are often worse (the old red blisters with "handcrafted in putter" written on it). Not to mention the strange alloy getting yellow when old :p

sorry but i don't see that recasting og OOP products is a bad thing if it lives up to standard its fine by me and it gives a little chance that a person like me can get a extremely rare product like the warmonger or a hellboro or a Capitol emperialis (the 2 last isn't a problem got them back in the early 90's by sheer luck)

Yes, agreed.
But some people try to sell their casting as genuine things, that's the problem.
If you know what you buy and are happy with it, it's not a probem.
