Hi Everyone,

------

I won't be leaving... this place is my community and home.

Like L-4, Epicomms is an oasis in my desert. I look forward to coming here, talking about our hobby and hearing from people I am genuinely fond of. Epicomms is a home away from home for me.

Dafrca: ...I will remove myself from these boards so you can be happy again.

At no point did I ever ask, hint or imply that Dafrca should leave. Dafrca left by his own decision and I'm not responsible for it. All the effort I went through writing to him here was intended to communicate that I want him to stay and was willing to work it out with him. If I didn't care, I wouldn't have said anything.

I'm sad that Dafrca, by his own decision, has decided to leave and I look forward to his eventual return.

------

I think Dafrca will be back as well. He's been going through a rough patch this year and I think its latest incarnation may be the worst so far. He's put off his gaming (including the community that goes with it) several times this year and rightly so because family does come first, after all.

What really got my attention this time was the personal nature of things and the fact that I still don't understand what I did "wrong." At this point, there's nothing more I can do. I reached out, I sincerely wrote him, I tried to rally the community behind him and he's simply just not willing to accept that I care and want to bridge the rifts.

------

After talking to two of the best people I know, Diana, my girlfriend, and Iaian AKA Cybershadow, I've decided to give Dafrca some space. It will be at least a month before I decide to test the waters again (Meaning mid-September at earliest).

------

I gave it a fighting try to work things out and I can't think of any additional way I could extend myself to him using my own devices. Without him telling me a way to extend myself to him (meaning receiving his help to do right by him), there's nothing more I can do except to leave some space and wait for time to heal. My bag of tricks is empty. My conscience is also clear because I did try. At this point, Dafrca has given up.

Dafrca: I wrote five different responses to this post and deleted them all. In the end they just were not going to fix anything nor were they going to help in any way.

I don't agree with Dafrca's above quote. Opening up the lines of communication is how to "fix things" or "to get help." Not doing so is giving up... plain and simple.

------

The best thing about all of this is that Dafrca's nature is good. In fact, he is one of the best people I know. Eventually, his inner self will get past this latest challenge to him, and he'll return to the community that loves him here at Epicomms. However, with the magnitude of the challenges and responsibilities he's dealing with at home and work, I'm guessing that it might be an extended leave of absence... possibly several months or even more.

------

I wrote this thread to empty my conscience and to leave a note of hope for those "regulars" who have been otherwise occupied. Give it some time. Dafrca's a good guy and he'll come around. We'll miss him in the mean time.

I'm considering this case closed and will no longer discuss it here on Epicomms until mid-September at earliest.

Back to our regular programing... ?:)

------

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Guys,

All of the questions come down to one big one for me:

QUESTION: "Why do I game?"

ANSWER: I game to meet new friends and preserve my relationships with good old ones. Gaming for me, is ultimately a way of relating to other people. It's a social activity. And that's what Epicomms is all about for me: friends.

Friends are people you can be true self with and friends give and take among another. That happens everyday here. I can't count how many times people have sent each other bitz for those "uncompleted projects" for nothing other than the pleasure of knowing they helped out. It's that sort of selfless giving that makes Epicomms a great community.

When times are hard for me, I come here for refuge and solace. When times are good, I like to share my good fortune here. At any old crazy time, I'm likely to share my often "fruitless" ideas and crazy projects here.

In short, Epicomms is my community and home.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Guys,

I'm visiting with my family today and we played a game of "Settlers of Canaan." It was fun and my nephews crack me up.

Quinn got into a road-building contest with his brother Vincent and ignored the multiple cities he could have built if he'd used his resources to make cities instead of roads. Because of that oversight, I WON! :p

Kids!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I love "Settlers of Cataan!"  Very enjoyable game. You're right: the key to winning is building cities.

Hi Guys,

Today was a crazy day. We played eight games of "Settlers of Canaan!"

For those not in the know, "Settlers of Canaan" is a variant of the better known game, "Settlers of Cataan." Whereas "Cataan" has a random set up with hexes, "Canaan" has a fixed set-up that replicates Biblical Israel complete with the Jordan River, Mount Carmel, Mount Tabor, Mount Gilboa and even the grand old city of Jerusalem! There is also a variant resource, copper, that can be chosen (as another functional resource) when it is received. In other words, the copper is like a wild card that can used for anything that is needed.

It was a fun day.

Another halmark happened today as well. For the first time EVER, my sister WON a game! :D

For some odd reason she has cruddy luck at the game and loses to someone else even if she is only one point off winning. Every time! Today was her first win ever in about eighty games! Mazel Tov to her!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I've heard many good things about that game. I wonder if the wife would like to try it out....

Primarch, if she likes games in general, she might like it. It's a fun game. My gaming group includes 2 girls who enjoy it very much.

Technically, "Settlers of Cataan" is intended for twelve-year-olds and above if I remember the package labelling correctly.

However, I've played it with children as young as six-years-old with great success. Like many popular board games, resource management is one of the primary game mechanisms and that tends to be a skill that more advanced thinkers acquire. However, I've also learned that the only way to acquire that skill is through practicing and mastering it. My nephews couldn't understand "Settlers of Canaan" when they first saw me playing it and the other day ago THEY asked me to play!

I think it's very good for their development to use those advanced management and thinking skills.

"Settlers of Cataan" is a classic game and, as such, is perfect as an entry level game for anyone including people not ordinarily interested in games such as non-gaming spouses, girls that fit those awful sterotypes and the like. I've introduced wives to the game that were previously vehemently against any sort of gaming as childish behavior despite their husband's obvious joys of gaming at a convention. They ended up not only having a great time, but buying a copy of the game to their husband's delight (my friends).

Here's some links:

Settlers of Catan, The (1995)

Settlers of Canaan, The (2002)

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

If you happen to have much time at your hands someday I recommend Twilight Imperium. See Fantasy Flight Games website for more info.

Hi Guys,

As kind of a weird sidenote, I have a project on my bench in microscale where I have been combining three main pieces:

- Microscale P-38 Lightning
- Silent Death Starfighter
- GZG shrouded VTOL Engine

I have been using these pieces to make my own VTOLs for an IG army I've been working on for some time now.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi!

Do we get to see pics of it soon? :)

You seem to be doing something I wish to try at some point, doing an IG army in non-GW minis. So it will be nice to see your proxy choices.
