All very true. Only after the D.A.K. retreated from El Alamein did Hitler send 3-4 Divs., including the 10th Panzer. By that time it was too late, had he had those units, Rommel would of had a better chance of taking the Suez. The US/UK landed the 1st Army in French NW Africa and Monty and the 8th Army was closing in from the east. The end result was predictable and only a matter of time ...

L-4,
Wow, an Arab Army of limited effectiveness... who would have thought! |
Arabs at War: Military Effectiveness, 1948-1991
The above link is to an Amazon page for a book called:
"Arabs at War: Military Effectiveness, 1948-1991 (Studies in War, Society, and the Military)" by Kenneth M. Pollack
It's the ultimate "low down and gritty" analysis of Arab armies' performance in the modern period.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

Excellent reviews ! ?I believe I have seen the author on the news. And his writings appear to reflect, what I had read and seen. Save for the Jordanian Arab Legion, lead by Brits (Glubb Pasha) in '48, all other Arab Forces lack leadership at the junior level. ?As a former Captain of Infantry I know how critical this is. And the Arabs' failure to grasp mobile combined arms warfare, even thought they have good equipment and numbers, is going to only make them effective against civilians and other Arabs. The Arab officers that I had worked with for the most part were not very impressive, except for an Egyptian Incurser (Commando) Officer. ?I may have to check this book out from the library down the road ... thanks ! ?Hopefully the Tallarn Forces are better lead !

Well, primarch, it took me quite a few months to get there. I did not want you and athmos to suffer from such difficulties.

Quote (Legion 4 @ 16 2003 Sep.,15:59) | Yes, 3 Mtn Div. and those Panzers is what I recall. And like North Africa everything was a side show compared to the Russian Front. ?And a few times, I had read that had the Germans secured the Suez and surrounding area, the Turks may have come in on the Axis side. However, as in WWI, the Turks would have needed German "advisors" and probably some equipment support. ?Great "what-if" scenario ?! ? |
In case somebody is interested, I now have a bit more detailed info about the German units in Finland.
There were a total of 4 Gebirgsj?ger divisions in Finland but only 3 were present at a time. 2nd and 6th GD were there until the Lapland War. 3rd GD was there from summer 1941 to the end of 1941. 7th GD was transferred to Northern Finland in february 1942. The 6th SS Gebirgsj?ger division was there all the time.
There were also some infantry divisions. The 163th and 169th operated in the Salla area and formed the XXVI Corps. 122nd infantry division was briefly in the south-eastern Finland in summer 1944.
Then there were Divisions Gruppe K and J. a Divisions gruppe is a mashed together hodgepodge formation of different units and is approximately the size of a division. Of these I have found no info save the name and general area of operations.
Two panzer abteilungen took part in the battles. z.b.V 40 and 211. The former was transferred to Norway in December 1942 and was equipped primarily with Pz I and II with some Pz IIIs. The 211 was equipped with captured French tanks (H-39 and S-35).
Several smaller units were also present at various times. Independent panzerkampfwagenzugs (platoons) 217, 218,and 219 arrived in early 1942 and were disbanded in January 1943. All were equipped with the same tanks as 211.
Two Sturmgesch?tz batteries (741 and 742) were present from summer 1943 to autumn 1943. They did not take part in combat
Sturmgesch?tz Brigade 303 was present in summer 1944 when the Soviet general assault was going on, but for some reason was used very little in combat.
