What-up guys, I'm on fire in the forum today. . .

I haven't heard anyone mention Man O' War in this forum (I know it is dominated by Epic), and was wondering if anyone still had it or played it. ?It is probably the Games Workshop game I am most impressed with. ?I don't think I have had a better time playing a game that involved so few minatures, which is kind of odd, since I have no interest in other naval warfare games.

I guess what I like about the game is that it really feels like you got you're money's worth with the quality of the components. ?Everything from the island terrain, counters, and cards are printed on nice, sturdy card (unlike more recent GW games), the artwork is excellent, the rulebook is very well written, and it plays very nice. ?The only draw back may be keeping track of all the counters on the ship templates, but honestly, I think all the things that can happen to a ship make each game that much more different than the next. ?Even having the wind changing direction can influence a turn. ?The sea monsters, flyers, and most off all, the variety in the composition and style of play for each fleet is awesome.

It is interesting since everyone hated the generic feel between the races in Epic 40k when it came out, and how distinctly different fleets are in Man O' War, but I don't hear much about it. ?I don't even think 40k makes you feel the difference in each army like Man O' War does with the fleets. ?Warhammer Fantasy probably comes closer, but I don't know much about the game.

Anyway, a decent fleet in Man O' War could be made up of around 10 ships, but I have had decent games with even less. ?I am not a big fan of the ocean aside from the beach, but I have always like the look of galleys and while Man O' War uses all sorts of ships, I find the designs very cool. ?Some races do get better fleets than others, but it is still a killer game. I think Man O' War is the first GW game that used the whole-initiative/chesslike/turn sequence that is making Warmaster and EpicA so popular. ?Moving one Man O' War or Squadron at a time, alternating players, was very cool.

Anyway, if you don't have a copy, you can pick up the box set and the Plague Fleet and Sea of Blood supplements (both are excellent and are must haves) on ebay from time to time.

I really think that if any of the Epic editions were put together as well as Man O' War was, we wouldn't argue over which one is best, there would be only one.

Anyone else still play it or liked it?

Hi!

I have very fond memories of Man-o-war. I was still a retailer when that game came out and I collected a dwarf fleet. People who gamed at the store collected the other races and we had a fun time with it. I thought it was pretty exciting as a game and we added the many additional units that came later as well as got the expansions. Good game, killed, as usual by GW's apathy. It disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared. I actually think it was the first game in that well known trend of producing games that would disappear in about 18 months. Oddly it has never resurfaced.

Perhaps it will come back someday.

I use some of the Dwarf ships for an Epic Squat Riverine Flotilla including a mini-sub.  Sorry, that's the best I could do, being stuck in the Epic Universe. Oh, I did use the Dragon skull from the Dark Elf Ark as a basis for a terrain piece ...   :D

You should know better than to praise a game to me! Now I won't get rest until I've tracked down a copy. Plus all the supplements. Must...resist...must...resist...must...buy... :O  :p

This wouldn't be such a bad thing had not my better half launched an unexpected anti-game crusade when me moved; something along the lines of me having too many games.  :{

a battle report involving little old me playing man o war is actually available on the web (follow the link).

I always thought it was a good game (though only played the once). I did actually buy it (in one of those infamous GW sales) with a load of ships but never even got as far as punching the card bitz and a few years ago sold it on eBay for silly amounts of money.

I have heard that it will be re-released but as an add-on for warmaster (therefore with bigger ships)

I've always liked the look of MoW, but have never managed to find a copy.. but I may make more of an effort if new ships come out for use with Warmaster, but won't they be on a different (far larger and therefore more expensive) scale....? :L

To be honest, I don't know if they are going to re-release the original, or make a completely new game.  I find it really hard to believe that they can improve the game any, and still retain the character the original had.  It is just a classic.  I doubt I will have any interest in playing with larger models.

Hey Mojarn Piett, but if I had to recommend a game that I thought was a classic, and one to hold on to, it would be Man O' War over any of the Epic games (and I love Epic).  When you think about all that it takes to set up and play most GW games, Man O' War doesn't take that much, and can easily be played on a kitchen table, where Epic, 40k, Warhammer, Necromunda, need dedicated space.  I hate to sound like I am pushing this game, but you guys have gotten to know me as a pretty critical guy since the Playtesting Vault, and when it comes to finding something critical about Man O' War, or something that I'd change, I can't do it. There must be half a dozen things I'd change in any other GW game. . .  

I do see Man O War stuff sell for more and more on Ebay.  You can still by most of the metal ships from GW Mail Order US, but not the sails or masts, so collecting can be a little tough.  I have been pretty lucky either finding people who will sell me for cheap (but not always), or just find extra stuff.  It is worth the extra effort though.  I know we are pretty critical of GW in this forum (yet play most of there games anyway), but Nigel really did a stellar job on this one.

Legion, an 'Epic Squat Riverine Flotilla?' I took another look at my minis after I read that and I guess I can see it, ???  Epic meets Vietnam I guess.

For those who still collect it (and it seems like it's not many of you), what are your favorite fleets? I have just about all of them but the High Elf Fleet (which I wouldn't mind having), but everything from the Brettonians to Chaos are great.

Yes my Squat Riverine Flotilla is liken to that.  I worked with Naval PCF boats of a River Assault Group (RAG) in Central America, so when I saw the Squat Ships - I had a flashback !!!   :laugh:  No photos yet (of anything), but Tas, I did see your FTs, finally ...  :D

those people who are wanting to create their own riverine flotillas I can recommend the 1/200th scale Vietname Riverine models from Skytrex - not sure if they still do them as I couldn't find them on their website.

Here is a picture to show you what they look like



I also have some Snapdragon resin landing craft which I use as Ork transports (I must get some pictures of them on my website soon).

Old Crow make some very nice resin craft as well. ?They do traditional patrol boat types, hovercraft and transports too. ?Havent got them painted up, but they will be my IG maritime assault group :laugh:

Just Checked the GHQ site, great 1/285th VN Riverine Models, well painted, in diorama scenes.  Excellent, including Hovercraft, used in SEA/VN.  I almost bought one of each, but each model is about $10-$12.  I've been on the Swift Boat & LCM, maybe that's why I chose the Squat Ships, this other stuff is a little too close to "home"...   Check out the site.  And Tas, I could not read your reply here, I only could read the quote - weird ?! ???
