Hi all, it's getting a bit cold here in the evenings (although Mojarn would laugh this off as tropical conditions, I'd bet). Now if I've got to progress in my tale of 6 gamers stint, I'll have to work a bit at night, and the best way to keep warm whilst painting is to, well, drink something warmish. Now: I like coffee (espresso or bust), but I try to keep consumption low-ish; I can't stand tea (apologies to tas-buffs) and I'm off hot chocolate. I don't much like cup-soup-stuff, which leaves just hot water - or more spirited stuff. Unfortunately, I'm a fussy type and don't much like whisky (my Scots ancestry are revolving in their graves now) or vodka or brandy or just about any alcoholic drink with two exceptions: Guiness, the only beer I can stomach - and I like that cold; and wine. Now Malta has some good wines, but is not renowned for mulled wine type stuff which goes down well hot. So, anyone got any recipes? My own version uses a third of a mug red wine, half a teaspoon sugar, a few drops of lemon juice, three drops of Angostura bitters, and the rest of the mug hot water. I call it fouled wine.....don't waste your expensive Beaujolais on this.
Any better suggestions?

For mulled wine, I usually pour a bottle in an enamelware pot (no bare metal as it can leach into the wine), throw in some cloves, a cinnamon stick, some citrus peel and bring it to a simmer, then cut off the heat and let it steep with the lid on.
If you want to keep the alcohol content, don't boil it or leave it hot and uncovered.
You can throw in whatever other spice you like - nutmeg, black pepper (no, really, it's good) or allspice being the most common I see.
Another, stouter version is Krupnik.
1 pint honey 1 pint water whatever spices you want from those above 1 fifth (750 ml) of vodka
Bring honey, water and spices to a simmer for about 20 minutes and skim any dross that forms. Remove from the heat and pour in vodka. You can drink it immediately while it's hot, or let it cool and heat it up a cup at a time in the microwave. The longer it sits, the more the flavors blend.
Incidentally, for those keeping score at home, it's ~35 proof.

I am lucky that my disaster zone (painting area) is well heated. I have good lighting, but not so good for pics...working on that. Although a bottle of wine on occasion is not unwarrented....

I have found when I want a warm drink, I like to use a mix sold here in the US of Spiced Apple Cider. I boil the water, toss in a few spoonfulls and drink.

Warmaster and Jimbo and Dafrca, thanks for the suggestions - sounds good!
Warmaster - I did try Gl?gg once, at a Christmas fair in Brussels - it was freezing, and the gloggy stuff worked wonders! As to hot chocolate, I made an overstrong mug a year or so ago (at least four bulging teaspoons) and havn't gotten over the sickly sweetness yet... although I'll admit I'd forgotten about cocoa.
Neal - thanks for two recipes for the price of one - I'm more attracted to the mulled wine, and the odds and ends of stuff (nutmeg, pepper etc.) sound interesting.
Markconz - I'm afraid my stomach doesn't stomach beer for some weird reason - instant bellyache! EXCEPT for Guiness, at least - now that's some ad, I should sell myself! An ice cold G is great, but holding a piping hot mug in your hands (whilst painting ) is part of the job!
Iblisdrax - I'm sorry, but tea doesn't work with me and 'm an arch-heretic. I guess the Teatotal faction of the Inquisition is after me now - allied to the Uisge Beatha faction for the occasion (work it out ).
Dafrca, do you ship to Malta?
L4, it's 10 degrees C here, so it's practically tropical compared to you... but a small island is a damp place, and I've felt less cold at close to 0 in Scotland than here at 10 Centigrade. I'm not a particularly good customer to the alcohol industry either, but I enjoy a more or less regular single glass of wine a day. Plus 2-3 Guinness - per annum!

It's cold here too but it's the damp that does it, the temperatures are actually not so bad. Vanvlak, bizarrely our drinking habits seem to be identical, except for the Irish/Scots tradition in Whiskey I love the stuff, and is the ideal warmer. Nealhunt seems to make mulled wine the same way I do, basically any spices and fruit juices available go into the pot along with the wine (Red only, you understand, none of that White stuff for me)
