Quote (Legion 4 @ 14 2004 Oct.,21:24) | History is full of Evil ... and it doesn't look like it's going away anytime soon. | Not that I like Evil, I do not, but what a boring place this would be if Evil did not visit once in a while.
Sometimes I think it is Evil that moves us to do better and work on being Good.

Quote (Tas @ 14 2004 Oct.,21:30) | ...but I'd just like to say that as long as there is Epic, then there will also be Goodness! | Oh so true.

Hi Dafrca, but then again, the Chinese believe it's not good to live in 'interesting times'. And so does Rincewind (cf terry Pratchett). I tend to agree.

Quote (Mojarn Piett @ 14 2004 Oct.,23:02) | I probably shouldn't ask but... who is he? And is he the same guy the people on the other island named a Tank after? |
He was a very famous British figure. Here is a quote from one site about him:
Oliver Cromwell was born in Huntingdon on April 25th 1599. ?Since his death as Lord Protector in 1658 his life, ambitions, motives and actions have been the subject of scholarly investigation and intense, often vitriolic, debate. ?Whatever position is taken on Cromwell, "Chief of Men" or "Brave Bad Man", ?his importance as a key figure in one of the most troubled periods of British history is unassailable. |
He and the Irish have issues. After the Civil War (British) he went to Ireland and used religion as an excuse to kill many civilians, I think the term pillage Pillage and Plunder would fit here. "The curse of Cromwell on you" became an Irish oath.
Bottom line, there is enough Evil Genocides through out history (including Modern events) that many groups could take offence or get their feelings hurt by comments.

PS: Yes the Tank is named after him.

Cromwell is also resposnible for destroying most of the wonderful castles in the UK which were used by his enemies to hold out against the Parliamentarians. he had them "slighted" ie pulled down, usually by underminign the walls) so they couldnt be used again by Royalists to oppose him and his "New Model Army"
His cause was actually pretty just, and he introduced the concept of people's representation to politics, but in the execution of his plan he was every bit as bad as some of the 'anti-christs" of history (Hitler, Napoleon...)

...and the Puritans were also something of a 'no fun' brigade -they banned Christmas celebrations, public games and other jolly things, so people were pretty fed up by the time he died.
