But, it will be relatively easy for the mb manufacturer to add an x16 slot.  And with the AGP secondary, to do two of them you chain it through the original, not the northbridge at all.

It won't be that easy, because each x16 slot requires 75watts of power, and dedicated lines from the PSU. Hence why boards with PCI-E need an ATX 2.0 PSU (new 24 pin power connector with extra 12V lines for the PCI-E slot).

Do you have link describing how 2 AGP slots could be linked w/o a 2nd Northbridge?

Interesting. Although it hasn't always been possible to do that. The fan out bridge was not in the AGP 2.0 spec. And AGP 3.0 motherboards only started shipping mid 2003.

Also there are a couple of likely reasons why no one bothered making a board with 2x AGP 8x slots.

1) The cards have to share one bus between theym so they each get half the usual bandwidth.

2) Only around 1 year between the introduction of AGP 3.0 mother boards and PCI-E mother boards, not woth the time for companies to invest the extra R&D when AGP is going to be replaced soon.

PCI-E won't have the problem of halving the bandwidth since its a serial bus instead of parrallel. The main problem would be the power requirments. And early chipsets that support PCI-E will only support 1 x16 slot, although within another year or so there will be newer chipsets that may support more.

Thats what I'm talking about....imagine this: 2 PCI-E x16 slots running the latest nvidia or ati cards linked together.  And the kicker:  possiblity of a 4 (count em, FOUR) monitor setup! The Insanity!!!!! :p
