We used to play largish games, but with phased arrivals.
ie 4k points to start with- then EITHER an additional
1.5k after turn 3 OR
another 2.5 k after turn 5

The agony as to wether you needed those troops NOW, or try to hold off and get that extra Warlord in 2 turns was quite a "Command Decsision" that weighed heavily.

Thus- big games, but by turn 3 or 5 the table was a little less crowded... :)

Hi!

We usually only had one or two players per side.  And playing on a 5x6 table, it was not crowded and left room to maneuver at 2000-4000 points.  When there are too many forces on a table, it goes from a battle of fire and movement to a linear battle of attrition.   But some guys like attrition, I prefer maneuver ...

We played on a 4 X 8 and I currently own 6 x 9 table, 6000 points still gives you a lot of room to move around. Still anything more the 9k on that table looks to crowded.

Sounds like a fun solution. You make any rules for when the reinforcements arrive?

Of course, each system's points varied a bit, SM1 units were a little more expensive than some SM2 and E40K ...

Hi!

True, as the versions go by point cost gets lower, so you get more troops with less points. A 6000 point AT1 game if I recall wasn't a very big game.

Oh I played 1 vs 2 I couldn't find a single player big enough so it was Space Marines vs Orks and Chaos. It took 1 day to set up the board and place the troops and four days of pretty much constant play to resolve the game.

Man thats a long haul! I dont have any experience with games that big one on one. I think the largest was maybe 12000 points per side and I think we didn't finish it, one on one is brutal for that scale.

Yep.

There were:

If you declare your reinforcements at the end of Turn 3, they are available to arrive in the centre on your edge in Turn 4.

If you declare on Turn 5, they arrive ANYWHERE along your boadr edge during Turn 6 (which deplicts them having more time to deploy where they are needed)

Declaration is done by "secret ballot" on paper at the end of turn 3 .  Both players reveal their declarations at the same time.

Actually a 6000 point SM1 game is closer to an average size SM2 game.  SM1 units are more costly then SM2 units of the same size ... generally ...

Thats pretty interesting. I might try to adopt/modify this for a variant rule in netepic for deployment.

Hi!

What is netepic?

You have asked my most favorite question!  :)

Netepic is a variant based on the second edition rules for epic known as epic space marine.

The variant was created by epic fans on the internet through its mailing list which currently has over 350 members.

It is currently in its 4th edition, but a revision for the 5th edition is nearing an end and should be done by the end of the year.

The Epicentre, our official website at: www.netepic.org houses the rules for download as well as many other "playaids" for general use.

I can go into more detail as to the improvements made by netepic if you so desire.

Any questions are welcome!
