I picked up this new book last weekend, as the adverts made it look interesting. Initially I was a little disappointed, as I was expecting more detail on the physiology of the alien species in 40K, and there is a story threaded through the book. Also, BL have fallen back on the terrible plan of using old photos and PhotoShopping them to look '40K' - which I think is really bad.
However, when you get into the book it is actually very interesting, and I actually recommend it! (And I almost never actually buy GW background books.) Many of the alien species are examined on the autopsy table, along with background. There are several versions on Tyranid construct, a Black Ork, a Kroot, a Tau Ethereal, an Eldar Exodite and others.
Some light is shed on the species. I wont give too much away unless people specifically ask for details, but it was uncovered that the diamond on the Tau Ethereals head is some kind of pheromone producer which it is theorised is what keeps the rest of the Tau in check for the Greater Good. It is also stated that the Ethereal has undergone rapid development, which shoots down my theory of the Ethereals being travellers fleeing the Tyranids and engineering the Tau.
There is also interesting insights into Ork reproduction (seriously!) and the Eldar actually look more alien than normal, which is a good thing. A few other races are presented such as the Thyrus and the Umbra (Warp denizens who are forced out of their home by the emergence of Daemons and are therefore attacking the source of the Warp invaders... creatures in this Universe such as humanity).
Generally, interesting. Does anyone else have this?
