As with many fellow forum member I buy and sell on eBay and similar sites. One thing that can cause consternation is when a seller greatly overcharges for a mini (starting price or buy it now). Equally upsetting is selling an item way below its material worth.

What I'm thinking is how would forum members feel about debating the cost of minis on the forum, and ultimately agree fair prices. We would have to set prices based on unpainted, complete single minis in good condition. This would provide a good ballpark figure to aid in our buying/selling.

Now clearly I'm spitballing here and I'm interested to know if anyone sees any holes in my idea or can feels the idea has legs?

Shrug. Free market, people will pay what they're worth.

Yeah I have to agree with Zombo. I have two sets of prices and a gentleman's approach to board members, generally giving them a first crack at the items at a lower price than I know I can get on evilbay. I know that they'll be going to good homes here and we'll see them again.

However once on ebay I'm going to price things for what I can get for them. I wouldn't sweat anyone else getting as much as they could for whatever they have [shrugs]

I agree with the two posts above. If i'm selling something on taccom i'm generally open to trading, cutting a deal, discounting for postage whatever, especially if one person is after multiple lots or i've traded with them before (lower risk). If it's ebay it probably means I need money and/or it's an item I want to get a top price for.

Yeah deals with people on Tac command are more sensible, but on e-bay I've both payed out ridiculous amounts, and also sold at least one thing for what I thought was a ridiculous amount (a Warlord titan with metal components that went for over $100). Most expensive things I've bought on e-bay were Chaos War Engines.

These days with all the great new 6mm manufacturers around I would rather support them than pay dumb prices on e-bay.

Oh also a little game theory here but ebay is generally a zero sum game between bidders. IN addition, the differences between the objectives and rules between the two environments (ebay and TacComms) are totally different. Basically we're playing by different rules here on what constitutes victory. Seeing my extra minis, or minis I want, go into another member's collection doesn't automatically mean I am losing everything.

Why is all that rubbish important? Cheap (for ebay) lots are often preyed upon by more unscrupulous dealers that are known for piecing out individual items for exorbitant prices causing an artificial inflation on the market. I don't have a problem with people doing that per say, obviously people out there are will to pay the gougers, but that doesn't mean I need to assist them either

I don't have a huge collection myself, but I will gladly offer stuff to Tac Com members or members of my local gaming group at below market prices. But I've got no problem whatsoever with people charging what the market will bear.

Jimmy, as far as artificial inflation of prices - unfortunately, it's pretty hard to cause "artificial" inflation of prices. If someone buys something for a price that you feel is inflated, that's what it is worth to the person who bought it. Any given good is worth what someone will pay for it. No more and no less. If something sells for a very high price, it doesn't mean that's the price that most people would pay for it - but it is the price that someone paid for it. And that's legit.

I've never bought any of the truly outrageously priced items on ebay no matter my desire for it nor the rarity because I know if I keep looking, I will find it for a better price. I've gotten some truly great deals on BarterTown, for example.

The only items I absolutely was unable to find a deal for less than market price for was FW Chaos Flyers. But I still felt the price was reasonable.

(It helps that I track markets and negotiate for a living...)
