actually, looking at this Ci is that the correct track unit? Looks like its a plastic tank chassis... ????

Yes it is a correct track unit for the mini.

The GW CI used a plastic hull base and track units. ?The reason given for not being able to sell them anymore is they "lost" the molds for the plastic bits.

Actually, the story that I heard was that the plastic track sections for the Hellbore and CI were the base from a model produced by another company which was out-sourced (a WWII tank in some scale)... and that practice is clearly not the way that GW work now! I am not sure how valid that is.

It was indeed from another tank model.
I can't remmeber what the tank in question was, but I have a feeling it was a post-war model.
When GW stopped outsourcing & decided to have everything made in house, they couldn't make the track sections for the CI & Hellbore, so stopped production.

At one stage the metal parts were made available from GW US again & I remmeber a thread here where we did track down the original model to get the tracks from, so people could complete their CI's, but I can't find the thread now :(

I'm pretty sure it's from a 1:76 M113 APC.  I've never owned a CI or Hellbore but I had a fleet of M113's for a Vietnam wargame and I recognise those track units.

I think I remember the same thing. It was an M113.

Of course I could be wrong as it was a long time ago that we tracked it down. And we all know how old men minds work, right?  :8:

Actually, i think I remember the plastic chassis in a Hellbore blister I found in a junk shop in Blackpool years ago.  Talk about changed days for GW!

They are not so expensive from new anyway... it may be cheaper to buy the metal on ebay and the tracks new!

That's definately the M113 kit I was thinking of.  It was 1:76 rather than 1:72 and the clincher is tha JB also do a 1:76 Land Rover which I had a few of too.
