[quote="Moscovian,Mar. 06 2008,07:34"]It would not

Last I checked there were a grand total of 5 properties under $200k listed for sale in the city.

Bit of a necropost, but that $200k would be lucky to get a 1 bedroom unit 25km from the CBD around here. ?And petrol is $1.40 per litre.

HA! Let me see... $200k works out at under ?101k. For that, in the South of the UK you can just about get a first floor studio flat (ie one room lounge/bedroom with a kitchen and bathroom). I cant guarantee the area for that, though.

And, petrol here is between ?1.04 and ?1.12 right now. My local has it at ?1.05, per litre, making that $2.08. And more than half of that is tax.  :(

two words, "electric car". thank you, saved the world , i know ?i know (bows)

Well this week I bought an electric scooter, does that count? ?:) :

American site:

Enough for my typical commuting needs around town. Actually saves time because I can park closer to where I need to be and cruise past traffic jams. One of my friends even rides hers up the disabled ramp to get even closer to the building! ?Case on the back to stick an epic army or my work bag in and there's some space under the seat too. Really fun to ride and eerily silent - just a very slight hum from the motor even at 50-60kph.

Only cost is charging at 40c NZ (30c US) per 100km. Zero maintenance costs, cheap rego. Zero pollution beyond initial manufacture and end of life disposal.

Two of my colleagues have these too (or the retro looking model - the Equinox 168, whereas mines the Ion 4000e) which is where I got the idea.

As others have said, we're running out of dinosaur juice (fossil fuels) and we need alternative power sources stat. You reckon gas is expensive now, you ain't seen nothing yet. ?Plenty of official government reports on the matter so it shouldn't be a surprise to people by now.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hirsch_report

"The peaking of world oil production presents the U.S. and the world with an unprecedented risk management problem. As peaking is approached, liquid fuel prices and price volatility will increase dramatically, and, without timely mitigation, the economic, social, and political costs will be unprecedented. Viable mitigation options exist on both the supply and demand sides, but to have substantial impact, they must be initiated more than a decade in advance of peaking." - Hirsch Report Intro 2005

Well as a student who can't afford a car anyway, a scooter has always seemed like a very tempting solution. My rusty old bicycle does just fine for the time being, but when the weather is bad and you have to go uphill with the wind in your face, some sort of motorized transportation begins to look like a very sensible idea :D

And I agree: For anyone who lives in a city, who doesn't need to commute for several hours each day, bikes and scooters are tonnes more practical than a car. Before I moved to my new apartment, going 7 km to Uni on a bike took me about 20 minutes. About the same time it would take with the bus, and sometimes even faster than by car during rush hour. Getting a bit of exercise doesn't hurt either :p

Since I don't have a car, I'm not really impacted by the raising oil prices...at least directly. However the increased demand for Bio-ethanol also reflects on the food prices, which I can guarantee, on a student budget, has a noteworthy impact. :(

Electric car.. I would love it just because I am a bit noise sensitive.  But driving 100 miles one way for work (which I do at least 1/wk) pretty much eliminates that idea.

Yes, the bio fuels are probably the dumbest idea I have ever heard of EVER.  Seriously, it is dumber than the guy who jumped from the 2nd tier of Yankee stadium into the netting over home plate.  It is dumber than the guy who strapped a rocket to his car.  It is dumber than....  (insert ANYTHING here).

Let's grow an acre of corn so I can drive 40 miles.   :p

But my wife and I are looking at something here to cut our bills.  Geothermal for the house.  Even paying for it on a loan at 7.8% interest for 20 years it will save us about $75 per month from our oil heating bills.  Now I'm not an environmentalist, but I am all for 'getting off the oil' as much as I can.  If I can't do it in my car, I can do it in my home.

not true anymore , and if youre rich and want style you can even get a sports car that goes over 100 mph with a 2 or 3 hundred mile range. do a search on "tesla roadster". if we wanted to we could do away with the infernal combustion engine alltogether ( for personal transport anyway)

I would love to be able to get a scooter for my commute to work, but scooters aren't allowed on US highways.  :(  Heck, I'd be happy to take public transportation, but there is none available for me.

If I could afford the initial cost, I would go solar for my house.  The front of my house faces South and gets plenty of sunlight. Even on overcast days the little solar lights I have along my front walk get enough juice to turn on.

There's a hilarious Simpsons bit on this topic.

Homer and Bart get on a little amusement park ride.
Manly voice: "This ride brought to you by your oil company."
Electric car: "I'm an electric car. I don't go very far or very fast, and if you drive me, people will think you're gay."
Animatronic gay people: "One of us! One of us!"

Yes, I'm bitter that the oil and car companies are conspiring against us. Thanks, Cads.
