I'm just looking forward to the release of the new models, regardless, of how the rules turn out.  We'll buy the new rule book and take any thing(s) we like and add it to our "Heretical Hybrid" system.  I get the impression that there are many out there waiting for Jervis to release his latest "creation", like "Moses awaiting a sign from God above" :D ...  As I have said (too many times) before, E-A will be what it will be, and 6-18 months later Jervis will try it again (maybe ??? ).  His flawed logic of ceasing Epic model production in the UK until the "blessed" release of E-A (Epic Redux part 4) may be a bad decision ... or not, for better or for worse, we'll just have to wait and see :L ...

I have been following Jervis's arguments regarding tournament lists versus the "section 8" no points costs for older models. I think thats a wrong move, but he has his mind made up on this.

I think the same thing. I found many of the arguments to be hollow.

They said it was so "new" players would not feel compelled to buy older OOP stuff. What do they think will happen the first time a new player sees my well painted Storm Hammers. It will not matter that I am using them as Bane Blades nor that he can get Bane Blades. What will matter is if he likes then he will be on Ebay anyway. There will still be people who feel compelled to buy the older stuff.

Then I loved Jervis when he said "Come on guys, you keep acting like I'm saying that in order to use OPP models you have to play scenarios. I am _not_ saying this at all." then in the same post he goes on to explain all the reasons why Scenario play is a good thing and that if you want to play with the stats he has given then you must play a scenario.

That is when I walked away from the conversation. As you said, his mind was made up long before we even attempted to discuss the issue. I wonder why he even wrote stats for the older models if they where not going to be playtested etc. Why not just do a "play as" list. Seems too odd to me.

I must admit that I agree with Jervis to a certain extent on this point. It is a difficult position to be in, with the old time players with their old OOP minis on one side, and the potential and necessary new blood to keep happy on the other. I dont think that he can actually win this one at all.

I dont know how I would cope with this situation. And maybe this solution is actually the best idea. What are the options? If new players want to get the older minis then they can. The point is not to alienate them by telling them that they have to get them to play the army.

There are a few decisions that I think are dubious, but this is not one of the worst in my mind.

Well, regardless of the dom and gloom here concerning E-A's release (and the daft army release schedule), I'm happy again - after deciding that I really needed some IG infantry and some extra Eldar sprues, I discovered half a dozen of each I'd bought on spec and hidden away the last time GW were blowing out all the E40k models :)

OTOH, it mean that once again I have more lead (and plastic) sitting around unpainted than I could conceivably turn into finished product in one lifetime :(

I know this is the trade forum, but the thread topic seems to have diverged greatly...

I don't get the "doom and gloom" about the release.  Everyone I know who played the old SM/Epic40K is at the least open-minded about the upcoming release.  Most are eager to see it.

Sorry I didn't get the attribution for the quotes below.  I'm just replying to the general ideas, and not to the specific person whose post I picked to reference.

>> I wonder what newbies are supposed to do when shown older models and then told they cant get them any more.

I think they'll say the same thing that newbie 40K players say when they see the old school models - "Hmm.  That's neat."  Then they'll go on and play.

I understand the desire of the collector, but in 40K and Warhammer, it works the other way around - newer is better.  I know guys who sold off their entire old army when a new line was released, only to buy the exact same force in the updated design.

Every game store I've been in for years has a half-price bin of 40K and fantasy figs that are still in the current rule sytem, but are the "old" design so no one buys them.

I have little doubt that Jervis et. al. has this in mind when they decide about new miniature designs.

>> Or worse yet, can you envision the multitude of arguements when a player with older models wants to use it and either the other player refuses or cant argree on a "fair value" for it?

That's what the "counts as" stuff is for.  Pay for it and field it as the "counts as" unit.  If you are playing with someone who is so points conscious that you can't come to an agreeable value, it's probably not going to be a friendly game anyway.  Personally, I have better things to do with my time than play with someone who is being stubborn.

Just my 2 cents...

Thanks for that post Neal....

About the urge for getting the latest stuff... I think it is prety stupid really- often old models are better than their newer versions, and even if this is not the case, I reckon its still pretty cool to have the older stuff, if just for novelty and interest...
And selling all your old Rhinos, Predators and Razorbacks to get the new ones is just plain dumb and a waste of ???...

Stormseer:  I agree 100% with everything you wrote.  I would rather be beaten with a bag of oranges than field one of those crappy looking new weirdboy towers or phantom titans.

Unfortunately, you and I do not make a market.  On the plus side, though, we do get an opportunity to buy figs when the newer versions do turn out better and it keeps all the figs in rotation. :)

I agree here too, we dont make the market but it is up to us on how we want to enjoy the game and what we want to field on the table.

I have like some others a vast majority of what was released in Epic throughout the years and I do find it saddening that some players would oppose to letting some models even hit the table but then again they have a say in it too. Irrelevant of opinons on versions of game or models as long as everyone enjoys that whats the problem.  Unfortunately this theme will never die so we can talk forever. There is no right or wrong just loads of fun if thats what you want to get out of it.

Me personally I am going to have loads of fun  :D
