...Meaning people not sending the goods after you've payed, faulty stuff, not what you expected to get, etc, etc. I guess...

Yes, there are a bunch of crooks out there. One must be wary. At least I wasn't screwed for too much money.

Hi!
The easy way to protect yourself on e-bay is to bid only on items where you can use a credit card to pay the auction with. This way if someone stiffs you, put a claim through the credit card company. That someone may be a jerk with you personally, but its different when a credit card company is breathing down the sellers neck.
This is not meant as a plug, but I use American express exclusively for online transactions, if someone stiffs me, I make one call...and...walla! No lost money and the seller has to deal with Amex.
In any event never bid on any item that wants cash only. With all the ways to pay electronically a restriction like this almost always smells of fraud.
Buyer beware....

e-bay is cool. I mean 132 deals and 2 screws. That is pretty good. Plus, they are only about a mile from my house so, I just throw rocks at the campus when I am unhappy.

Primarch is right. One reason I like Paypal is they stand behind me if something goes odd. I use a credit card and have that protection as well. Too often the Bartertown person wants Money Orders only.
Also many people on Bartertown claim they can't do pictures. I do not buy if I can not see pictures.
Signius, if you have never been burned on Bartertown but twice on ebay You have been very lucky. So far I have not had any problem on ebay but bartertown has not been kind to me a few times. Items not as discribed (no pictures, thus my rule now is no pictures, no buy) bad packing, broken stuff, very slow sends (over a year in one case) and in one case item never sent.
Now, do not get me wrong, I have had some great trades and buys on bartertown as well. Just I have grown to think of Bartertown as the higher risk is all.

Yeah, I am with you. BT is a risky place. The picture thing is a good idea. You also have to check the references. If it is 0 or 1, they gotta send first. If you are buying, then it is better to steer clear altogether. One guy I traded had a good idea. Have the person you are trading with take a picture ,have them write down the date on a peice of paper and include it in the pics of the peices you are trading.

Hi!
Thats another important point dafrca, pictures. I dont bid on sellers who dont post pictures. Not that everyone who doesn't post them is dishonest, but it makes you wonder.
Its an additive thing, if you dont have pictures, you MUST take paypal or credit cards and have a VERY detailed list. No pictures, no paypal and short lits are just bad deals waiting to happen.
Bartertown, like e-bay has a seller rating that you can check, but it doesn't protect versus first time sellers.
Here are some more tips:
1. C.O.D. There is absolutely NO reasonable excuse (excluding overseas orders) for someone not to do it via C.O.D.
2. Mail orders, avoid them. If you cant, they do have one big advantage. If you are "taken" in a deal using one, you can sick the federal government on the seller for mail fraud. He can ignore you, but I dont think he will ignore threats of fines and jail from the government. Just remember to keep the MO stub as proof as well as e-mails and send that in to the postmaster nearest you.
3. Split up larger deals. If I am paying cash or via MO, I NEVER pay more than 100 dollars at one go.
4. Ask for references, most poeple who deal honestly have them, take the time to actually CONTACT those references, they can be fake.
