I will be selling stuff.  Soon.  :;): I don't want to give anything away but it rhymes with "stark feldar".

MN, I meant you were rich relative to buying American products (compared to Americans buying European products).

Americans are not used to paying that much in gasoline.  When it hit $2.00/gallon everyone freaked.  Now it is at $3.00/gallon and looking to go higher.  The public is mesmerized.  It's like staring up at the spacecraft in Independence Day right before it incinerates the city - nobody knows what to do at this point.

I knew there was something I'd left unfinished with discussions with you, Mosc. Let me get my thinking cap on again...

Good grief, going by the same price that would be 47p per Litre!  Petrol and diesel have been at around 95-99 pence/litre for months here.  In fact a while ago petrol stations had to add an extra digit oonto price boards when petrol went over ?1 a litre!

Mind you we do use far smaller and more efficient cars over here :p :D

You mean it was a dumb idea to buy my Hummer3 in the middle of a recession and oil crisis?

EDIT: In reality I own a Saturn with good gas mileage.  I am just complaining because I am a cheap cad.

It would not shock me if Canada became one of the wealthiest countries in the world if it opened those oil reserves.  It would also not shock me if Canada was INVADED for those oil reserves. :p

Speaking as someone who lives in Calgary Alberta where all the major Canadian oil companies are based in...

I kind of wish the oil would drop back down to about $20/barrel personally.

In the last four years property values here have quite literally jumped 200% on average and 300% in some areas. Our roads are turning into major US city style traffic jams and our crime rate has shot through the roof.

I'm making more money than both my parents ever made put together and if I had to get a mortgage right now I could only qualify for a bachelor suite in a questionable section of town unless I wanted a 50 year mortgage.

Last I checked there were a grand total of 5 properties under $200k listed for sale in the city.

On a lighter note though we have about 70,000 Americans living here right now and about the same amount of Russians. Layer in the Brits up from BATUS Suffield and the Quebecois and it almost feels like occupied Berlin.  :p

Well back in the early 80's, IIRC, the old S&T published a wargame called "Oil War". About US and ECC forces invade the the Middle East for obvious reasons. Of course it's all hypothetical at this point ...  :D

Bit of a necropost, but that $200k would be lucky to get a 1 bedroom unit 25km from the CBD around here.  And petrol is $1.40 per litre.

Well this week I bought an electric scooter, does that count?  :) :

American site:
http://www.evtamerica.com/4000e.htm

Enough for my typical commuting needs around town. Actually saves time because I can park closer to where I need to be and cruise past traffic jams. One of my friends even rides hers up the disabled ramp to get even closer to the building!  Case on the back to stick an epic army or my work bag in and there's some space under the seat too. Really fun to ride and eerily silent - just a very slight hum from the motor even at 50-60kph.

Only cost is charging at 40c NZ (30c US) per 100km. Zero maintenance costs, cheap rego. Zero pollution beyond initial manufacture and end of life disposal.

Two of my colleagues have these too (or the retro looking model - the Equinox 168, whereas mines the Ion 4000e) which is where I got the idea.

As others have said, we're running out of dinosaur juice (fossil fuels) and we need alternative power sources stat. You reckon gas is expensive now, you ain't seen nothing yet.  Plenty of official government reports on the matter so it shouldn't be a surprise to people by now.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hirsch_report

"The peaking of world oil production presents the U.S. and the world with an unprecedented risk management problem. As peaking is approached, liquid fuel prices and price volatility will increase dramatically, and, without timely mitigation, the economic, social, and political costs will be unprecedented. Viable mitigation options exist on both the supply and demand sides, but to have substantial impact, they must be initiated more than a decade in advance of peaking." - Hirsch Report Intro 2005

I want to hire some of you guys to scratchbuild some tanks for me, but the current exchange rate makes that difficult.

It's not the money, it's the time! I'd happily do some if I wasn't so busy. If you've not got any done by the time I run out of jobs, we'll sort something out!

The exchange rate is a bummer, though. I used to sell resin dinosaurs, mostly to the US, but the falling exchange rate meant my prices were effectively going up even though I wasn't charging any extra! So no more dinos for me, I'm afraid...
Regards,
Reaver
