Ok, Ive been building up a Forgeworld Tau fleet for some time but something that has persistently perplexed me is how to neatly fill in the grooves of the hull with black while making the rest white?  This has been mostly a problem with my protectors but still I'd like to know how the other Tau players are doing it.  The help is much appreciated!

Similar scheme, just do it.

Black ink for the lines, watered down white for touch up.

Alternatively you could try with a fine pen with water resistant ink. It'll have to be thinner than 0.5 mm to do the trick so you might have to do a bit of searching to find the right type. However I' a bit worried that the pen might cause the paint to crackle off the resin models if they've not been cleaned of mould grease properly before undercoating.

Hey Zhai,

I've been building a Kor'vesh fleet also. Usually I find that BFG ships are easily painted with a bit of drybrushing, but with all the flat areas on FW's tau ships, I reckoned they wouldnt look right, so I've tried something different: I started with a base coat of the colours I chose (GW paints - Catachan green main hull, with Commando Khaki/ Catachan green wings). I then use Windsor & Newton drawing inks to shade, with a coat of emerald green over the green, and nut brown over the khaki. After that I built up the colour with successive shades of highlights, using brown ink in any seams and lines which needed it (you dont really need black ink, the lines are so fine anyway, it looks nearly black). I have to say, I'm quietly pleased with the end result, but it takes ages. Reckon I'll stick with it though. If you like I'll photo one of the finished protectors and mail it in for a looksee?

Very much looking forward to seeing your ships and painting style Recidivist :-)

Also, I tried inking in the lines and touching up with watered down skull white and they have become quite pleasing to me, I will also try to get pics up.

New and final scheme is Skull white hulls and Enchanted blue trim.

Hey Zhai,

Very much looking forward to seeing your own ships - skull white & blue trim? That'll look pretty cool when finished. So you've found ink to work ok? I swear by the stuff, I've tried pens in the past but sometimes they clog up, so ended up opting for ink and a small brush.
Right, I'll address the camera problem soon, day or 2 max. Problem is that my home pc is crap & crashes if I send pictures, so it'll have to be my work pc (when my boss isnt looking ;-) )

Ok Zhai,

Not sure if this'll work or if you'll be able to make out anything in my dodgy photo, but here goes...
