Well to start off the terrain forum I wanted to start a topic that was very near and dear to my heart when I started to collect terrain.

I long time ago I decided to do a Western European theme for my terrian. ?Now in any kind of temperate climate terrian your going to needs tress, lot and lots of trees.

So here are my tree related questions:

1. ?How to I make trees?

2. ?Where to I find pre-made trees?

3. ?What size should the trees be?

4. ?How should I base my trees in groups or as individuals?? ?

Maybe this topic can be pinned to provided answers to new terrian makers. ?

My answers to the questions to follow...

Answering number 4, I would suggest basing them in groups, on a flocked base.  This is so that you can say that any stand on the base can use that terrain type for cover purposes, avoiding such arguments as 'no my tank was in the trees!  No, it wasnt!'

Hi!

As mentioned on another thread, warzone makes good trees for epic scale.

Hi Luis,

In my earlier post, this is what I found:

1. How to I make trees?

Picture wire, chenille pipecleaners, toothpicks, small screws, flock, foliage clusters, feathers, etc. are all good materials.

2. Where to I find pre-made trees?

I ended up buying a Woodland Scenics trunk package (cheap and plastic) along with foliage from them.

3. What size should the trees be?

I recommend between 1 to 3 inches and VERY VERY few higher than that. Some trees like Spruce might be bigger.

4. How should I base my trees in groups or as individuals?

I have based mine on cheap steel washers of different sizes both as singles and multiples. I add plaster of paris cast rocks (using a Woodland Scenics mold), slight eleveation using styrofoam shims or clay and then painting and flocking. I like the mix of single trees (a la DS-II) and multiple groups.

I use felt (very cheap) cut out into kidney shapes to define the edge of the woods. The trees on top of the felt woods templates can be moved to accomodate the woods. It's a very functional design. Some other designs are more aesthetically pleasing, but this model works very well with the game dynamics (no fights about where the edge of the woods begins, which is important for tournaments and other times when you play with strangers).

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I once saw someone use the branches of those ugly plastic Christmas trees.

Perhaps not the best looking trees but you could easily fill the entire table with forest from a single tree.

It might improve the look of the trees if you glue flock or foliage onto them. :;):

Cheers! :)

My snow terrain uses small model pine trees, which are cheap (25p) but look very good when painted...
They are about 6-8cm tall, but can quite easily be cut down due to their construction. I should be visiting my model shop in a day or two, so I'll check what brand they are then.  :)

I use K&M trees.

They are individually based, though I have based a few on multiple bases.

As seen in the corner of this picture:

Well here are my answers to my own question????

1. How to I make trees?

I explored how to make trees many different ways. ?I think I have read every article on how to make trees found on the net. ?After a couple of years I have come to conclusion that is best, for me at least, just to order pre-made stuff. ?

2. Where to I find pre-made trees?

My recommendation for finding ?The stuff trees are made of? is with Woodland Scenics; as many have recommended already. ?Please be aware that they do sell value packs that are reasonably priced.

Look under landscape, trees, ready made value packs

Also if you search for Model Railroad supplies there is a large selection of different styles. ?

I would warn that the Woodland Scenic trees do shed and sometimes need to be touched up. ?Not very hard just use some glue, they sell their own special brand but I?m sure Elmo?s (PVA) glue will work. ?Just coat the tree in glue shake it in bag of clump foliage. ? ?

3. What size should the trees be?

I use my trees for a variety of miniature games; from 28mm 40K, to 15mm Napoleonic, and of course 6mm Epic. ?

My trees range between 2-6 inches in height. ?Depending on the game, they are either soaring Red Woods or the everyday kind found in our backyards. ?

I don?t worry about the scale because just driving across the country, I have seen so many different kinds I am convinced ?it would work somewhere. Where I live I have Pines about the size of a three story building, well they are at least three time the height of my house and Eucalyptus trees grow even taller.

I would recommend a combining a variety of heights to give your woodland view a more natural feel. Regarless of scale the variety will just make it seem right. ? ?

4. How should I base my trees in groups or as individuals?

I recommend basing trees as individuals. I base them on metal washers from a hardware store. This allows me to store them in plastic containers with magnetic sheeting on the bottom to hold them in place.

The individual basing allows me the freedom to make my trees either a tight group in a forest or a string of trees along a highway. ?

For real eye candy group the trees in tightly using a variety of heights. It looks awesome on the tabletop to see actual forest. But it takes a lot of trees to achieve this effect. ?

More often I just spread them out to fill in the general shape of a woodland area. With most of my opponents it not a big deal that the border is not perfectly defined. I just ask, ?Is he in??

If I had to, I would either use felt or simply cut shapes out of balsa wood and flock them, using a different color from the main board. To make the boundries of the woods.

My final thought is this: If I had to do it all over again I would choose the Desert as my primary terrain table. I wouldn?t need trees then! ?:D ?

Take care!

Yeah, thats what I am doing now, desert.  Been searching for cactuses and scrub.  Found scrub that works, no cactii.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have used a number of different types. I liked the G/W versions, but have used others.  I also have used plastic vegetation for fish tanks (properly cut to size). Great for those niffy alien worlds !  :D

I think it was terragenesis that showed an awesome way to turn wooden meat skewers into bamboo-like foliage by judicious use of camo green banding. It looked really impressive.

Edit: It might have been "how to build wargames terrain" ; I forget where I saw it.

All hail the tree herder!! ? :D

Ok so you guys don't think I'm crazy when I say I should have done desert terrian board. ?But I'm to far gone now to be saved. ?Just pity me. ?:blues:

So in EpiComm fashion

:D

I placed a 6-8mm Epic figure, a 15mm Napoleonic figure (AB), and a 28mm 40K figure in front of the trees to see how compatable the trees are with different games.

The first set of pines was all pre-made trees that I ordered through my local gaming store. ?They are wire and a really hard flock. ?They came in three sizes. ?All three sizes work in the game, but have a different look and effect. ?

As you can see the smallest tress are like small Xmas trees to the 40K guy while being tall pines to the epic soldier. ?Unfortunately I don't remember the manufacturer of these trees. ?They do look great so if any one knows what they are please let me know.

The next group is Woodland Scenics. ?This is your basic plastic trunk with foliage glued on. ?They look good and give a more rural farm look. What is scary I have a 60 more sitting on the shelf.

The last group is some fall trees I picked up long ago. ?They tough and they work ok. ?I few of these mix in gives a nice effect.

Well here are the pictures. Enjoy
