What's the best way to make woods / forest?

And where do I buy the trees?

---

I want to make some woods for an upcoming game. What's the best way to go about making forest / woods?

And, where is the best place to buy the trees?

Brand?

Store?

I'd prefer to buy somewhere in Northern California, but mail order or an Internet purchase would also be fine.

---

Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I just bought loads of model pine trees from my local model shop for my snow scenery- they were cheaper than most other stuff I've seen out there at 25p each- sorry I havn't got a brand for you though Maksim.. :(

As for building them, I just tidied them up a little, brushed over them with white, and then stuck them into some hill sections I made with blue foam glued onto MDF and sanded smooth. I drilled holes in the base of my FW building section and just stuck them in, but the bits are more resilient I've found...

Trentbartlem: I always look to this brand for really nice trees:

(prices are in AUD; I'm sure you can get cheaper in the US)

There are also some topics about trees on this forum - you might have to search the archives tho.

GypsyComet: Short term you'll pay major stash for the trees. A little longer term and you can find good deals on buckets of little brush conifers (bristle brush pine trees) at Michaels, as they always have loads of them for Christmas. 1", 2", and 3" are all quite appropriate for Epic.

As for the whole forest, you have many options, with the best ones being dependent on the game they'll be used for. One I'm looking at is to use a simple chunk of cut felt to designate the edges of the forest, and to mount two or three of the little brush conifers each to GW 60mm rounds in random fashion. Scatter several of these about the felted area, depending on size, or use them as small copses by themselves. I've got the makings for a small collection, and can put some effort into having them for ConQuest*, if you like. You still get to do the felt, though...

Agent Brown: First posted on General Discussion.

I use a compromise between the above options. Glue the trees to a card base (2-5 trees per base), very close together, and flock the base. Cut out some large felt/card/hardboard shapes to use as wood bases and flock. These large plain bases represent the woods and the smaller, tree covered bases are there for visual effect. The smaller bases can be moved to accomodate troop stands and if you make enough of them look very effective.
Woods look like woods, dense and impenetrable, except when you want to enter them. Saves the hassle of moving a lot of trees individually as well.

Wintermute: A friend of mine came up with a really good method of making woods for 40K which should easily transfer to epic.

He used some hardboard as a base for the forest then fixed brass tubing to it, he painted this all up and placed trees he'd bought from a hobby shop in the brass tubes.

When a unit enter the wood you can simply deforest an area of the wood for easy access, by pulling some of the trees out of the brass tubes.

It worked a treat and when I get round to making my own epic forest this is probably the method I'll use.

Cheers!

Writhe: Although they are much derided, the tree sprues from 40k can be used to make tall palm trees. Not great for an Armageddon based campaign, but if you plan on using Epic on a Death World or other planet with an active biosphere they should do nicely. Add a little colored resin and you can have an oasis or beach.

Sherlock: For flexible tree-stands I hot-glue trees to 'rubber' shelf liner.
Shelf liner can be gotten in the 'household' section of any
Dollar Store or Wal-Mart, etc. It comes in various colors and can
be painted. (If you don't know what it is, think of a long roll of lace covered with vinyl).
With scissors, cut random patches, say 3"x6" (or whatever)
Fix the trees to this flexible "base", either by using the base of the
tree if it has one.. or by bending the trunk in a right angle and
slipping it thru the lace.
You wind up with a 'forest' base that can be placed anywhere.
The area of the shelf-liner defines the actual forested area..
the trees are more for effect.
Enjoy

Deebee: I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but a good way to "make" epic trees from scratch is to use bottle brushes, use clippers to cut the bottle brush into segments a little longer than you want the tree length.

Put a blob of super or PVA glue onto the top of said tree and then pull out any bristles near the bottom to make a trunk, then put a blob of PVA/super glue at the top of the trunk/bottom of the bristels, to keep the bristles from falling out.

Then give the "tree" a little haircut to make it look more tree like, paint the whole thing brown then the bristles green, once its dry put PVA glue on the bristles and dip it into some flock to cover it.

You can usually make 4-5 Trees from a single brush and they're pretty cheap to buy. and they look quite effective.. well i think they do anyway.

[terrainmakers] 6mm tree bases for Battletech, Epic-Armageddon, microarmor, etc. ...

Hi,

I used Woodland Scenics pack 1170, with 144 tree bases that range in height from 1&1/2" to 2&1/2", but do not come with foliage for the tops. You can get the trunk pack and a bag of foliage to mount on top for less than $20.00 USD.

I mounted mine on washers, 5/8" and 3/4" for single trees (then placed on a felt cut-out to indicate the "edges" of the woods / forest AND...

I also mounted multiple groups of trees on 2" fender washers with little plaster-cast rocks (Woodland scenics makes rock moulds and plaster of paris is cheap) and hills from foam and other items to make little woods mini-dioramas. They look really good.

The woods mini dioramas were coated with either greenstuff, Vallejo's Piedra Pomez or white PVA glue sprinkled with sand or small rocks to give texture.

My current woods set are Oaks-type trees (deciduous or conifers), but I plan to build a Pine tree forest (Also using Woodland Scenics trunks and foliage) and also a jungle (Using aquarium plants pulled apart and mounted similarly) when the chance comes.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
