Has anybody ever tried to make a folding gaming table? As gaming space is always an issue I'd like to have a gaming board which can be stowed in a (big) closet more or less conveniently when I'm not gaming.

Hi Mojarn,
personally, no, but the old wargaming club had four 4' x 4' tables fixed to the wall with hinges and folded flat to it when not in used. They were lowered down to rest their free end on trestles. They worked well, and a larger size could be managed. No permanent 3-D terrain features, though!

A nice design I've seen for a model railway track uses a chest of drawers of the sort which have drawers on sliding rails. The table replaced one of the drawers, and simply rolled out for use. A false drawer panel fixed to the end of the table camouflages it when not in use. This too needs support when extended. this could be limited by the depth of the chest of drawers, but a central hinge could permit the table to first roll out and then pivot open.  If you get the whole chest of drawers, you may as well store your armies and rules and measuring stuff and dice and templates below. Useful!

Other designs (again from model railway catalogues - useful hobby, this!) are the classic board on castors sliding under a (solid) bed and the table suspended close to the roof on pulleys, lowered down for use - should be supported during use too, unless you get earthquakes in Finland, in which case it's better left suspended....
:p

cheers.

Make a frame with folding legs and then put your board on top. Simple design and easier to store that way.

I once made a board with hinges that was a heavy 6'x8' beast. Never again!

My newer boards use cloth over a table or use section of cheap 2'x4' plywood/fiberboard.

2'x4' is about as big as I want to see and store.

Folding business tables with a larger board attached AKA screwed to the top is what most gaming stores seem to use.

Folding business tables are usually not too expensive if you have room for one.

Before having a gaming club in barcelona I used to have my own gaming table at home. Obviously you can't have a 8x4 table stored at home easily, but the answer is rather easy. 4x4 can be stored under any medium sized bed so I simply had 2 tables of 4x4. Not exactly folding, but you can put those on top of a regular tale to have a decent sized table.

I have seen a table consisting of 4 2x4 planks. They were a kind of hard light wood and they had hinges uniting them. Adds stability to the table (if youi need it) and is even easier to store. The problem is that the hinges might appear in the gaming surface if you are not careful when assembling them.

I wrangled with the option of a folding or mobile table when I was building mine (still a work in progress :( )  and decided that since you couldnt use 3d terrain built into it permanently, then it wasnt what I wanted.  'Course, I have since gone back to a flat, terrain-free table design anyway,   so what do I know?

Hi!

I found that those folding ping pong tables with wheels made excellent gaming tables.
