I am looking forward to the release of Epic-Armageddon, and I want to have some terrain ready for its' arrival.

- For an average sized game, what is an ideal table size? ?

- Which types of terrain features lend themselves best to 6mm games? ?

I am trying to imagine pictures that will work with both small infantry strips and larger titans... while still looking nice.

Welcome nighserpent to the boards and most importantly Epic!

You'll need a 6 x 4 gaming surface for a decent battle, otherwise you wont have room for flanking and manoeuvre.  If you are starting from scratch a battlescape mat or simple drop cloth is probably the best way to start.

For terrain, get yourself started with some basics- hills, woods and the like.  There are some great terrain making websites out there like Terragenesis so go take a look- its easier to do that it first appears!

Good luck

I had a 4x8 table with cheap roll turf.  The kind you get for train layouts.  I did a lot of basic terrain with florist foam.

Hi!

You can get the green "felt" cloth at a shop that sells cloth for about 7-9 dollars the yard. Then you can use books and even CD cases to simulate hills under that cloth.

Makes for a good cheap terrain.

Thanks, guys!

Oh, I know Jimbo's work, alright! :D ?Damn good stuff!

For 40K games, I have been using a felt like cloth draped over a 4x8' table, and then plunk over pieces of terrain that seemed to fit the mission.

I was curious if there were certain types of terrain that worked especially well at that scale and with the mechanics of the game.

- Are there some types that players just never seem to use (perhas worthless in game terms), or some must-haves? ?

I am trying to imagine pieces that would easily accomodate a small stand of troops, as well as a large walking warmachine...

- How realistic a goal is this?

- How would you make woods work in the game? ?

In 40K, I have a piece of dark green felt that is the same footprint as the base of trees. When a unit moves into the woods (especially a vehicle), I remove the base and leave the green felt. It is easier to move the models through, while still keeping an accurate delineation of the treeline. ?

- Is there a better way for Epic?

There is so much 6, 10, & 15mm terrain types out there, you can use or make whatever you can think of.

The E-40K rules has a random terrain generator for different types of planets, like in the G/W fluff: desert, ice or jungle death worlds, daemon planets, etc., etc., etc. ?

Any type of environment you can think of is fine for Epic, ridge lines, hill, trees, bushes, lakes, rivers, crops, ponds, roads, bridges, feral villages, imperial towns, alien structures of all types, swamps, ruins, pyramids, forts etc.

In 12+ years of "Epicing", I have or have used, all of the above and more...
It's up to you... ?

- How does terrain work? ?

Like in any other game, look at the terrain charts for movement prohabitions; and line of sight, if you can only see about 50% then he gets a cover bonus (yes, it mentions that in the E-A rules too). If he is in a building he gets cover, etc. etc. ...

Just like any other tactical scale game... :D

I use terrain on the basis

does it look good
can you "move" though it

therefore I very rarely use woods (but do use trees)

my ruins are very "accessible" (but areas are agreed as difficult terrain before the game starts)

The Forgeworld Epic Scenery (eg the fortifications) work well with Epic troops; also the Cathedral has space for troops as well.

Epic's finiest terrain bonus is the ruined city look.
The ruined building sprues + the mini ruins from the plastic bases make such terrain very simple to make & it almost always looks great.

A large ruined town inthe center of a battlefield really adds to the big scale sweeping conflict look of epic. Add in a couple of hills, some FW buildings if you have the ??'s or some out-of-town science labs from the Timecast otherworld(?) range and you got yourself a good board with very little work required.

Of course you can always take the extra step or three like Mark Bedofrd and Carl woodrow have both done (I'm still working on my big city board after 18+ months..... painting Figures seems to keep getting priority over it  :( )

Carl Woodrow's work can be seen on his site: 40K Dropship

The other board I was thinking of I got mixed up on. Its not Mark Bedford's work, but that of Keith Krelle & Warwick.

At any rate, I think it has only been displayed officially in one of the Epic Magazines. However, I did play across in at the Black Library open day last year, pictures of which can be seen on Epic40k.com, under articles / convention reports.

The local GW shop had an idea I liked.

They did their woods by making a painted base, then based each tree individually.  The base is the border of the terrain feature, obviously.  The nice thing, though, is that you can put your figs on the base and move the trees out of the way.

That would be an excellent way to make sure that your woods terrain would accomodate those 6cm titan bases while not looking sad and sparse the rest of the time.

I also agree that the $3.50 epic ruins sprues from GW mail order are a good bargain - easy to assemble, and they can really be painted up nicely.

Hi!

One slick idea for woods that I saw once was a guy who cut out in the same felt material as the tablecolth for gaming the different shapes he wanted for woods and would use them as "templates" for positioning trees. There was never a problem with exactly "where" the forest border was because the felt template clearly indicated that fact.

Great game tool.
