Long, long time ago in a galaxy far away I bought some paints made by The Armoury. There was one particularly interesting paint called "pearl". The paint was translucent; when painted over a color some of the original color still showed and it was given a pearly sheen. At least I think that's the word... :blush:

Since I have started Man O'War I think that paint would be perfect for finishing Elf ships, but the problem is the company has apparently stopped making the paints and only produces tools and spray primers.  :(  Does anybody know of a similar paint by any manufacturer?

This may be a longshot but how about Nail polish? If there's some way of thinning it down a bit I think it should be possible to get one with a similar effect.

Interesting suggestion... I just might try it. I guess nail polish remover would be good for thinning. The one without acetone shouldn't damage the paint below as it works so slowly as a paint stripper.

My only real concern is that thinning might make the nail polish matt or unclear in some way so it is probably a good idea to do some tests first.

_Remover_ is not for thinning. I strongly advise against trying to use it to thin the polish...

Try acrylic enamel paint thinners instead.

Would the Humbrol Clear paints be of any use? It is an enamel though, a pain to remove if it goes wrong.

Hi!

Darn, thats a pretty wierd color. I dont think I have seen any manufacturer even come close to a color like that.

Warmaster's suggestion may be your only choice, but definitely try it out first before subjecting your epic minis to it.

Well, I'm off to my local modelling store this evening and I'll check on what they have...it's primarily military scale models so he has multiple different paints to select from...when in doubt someone might have suggestions...Personally I still have a bottle of old Citedel Metalic Purple that I use VERY sparingly since I can't get any more...But I would love more selection for gem and metal colors...

Does GW no longer do that little tub of clear gloss varnish? If they do you could use that but before you apply it use a very light glaze of whatever colour you would like to give a slight tint to, like that "Pearl" colour you mentioned earlier on.

Mojarn:  I have an answer for you if you are in the US.  Outside, I don't know if it applies.

Liquitex makes a "Pearlescent" waterbased acrylic.  It has a white base with an opalescent/pearlescent sheen to it like you want.

IIRC, a 2 ounce bottle of Liquitex paints costs about the same as a GW pot (for 4 times the size).

Liquitex's paints are formulated for painters, so they are quite thick.  You will have to thin them down.  By the time you thin it to the point it's like a typical mini paint it may be translucent enough for you to just paint it over, but I have some reservations about that.

I would suggest using inks to thin it and tint it appropriately.  If you get the color pretty close and thin it down, it will probably work as an over-coat.  Or you can just tint it with the inks and use it as the primary coat.

I'm not sure about their international availability.

Well, I am outside of US but I'll be VERY surprised if there isn't a single webshop carrying the Liquitex products. Now that I know the brand name I might even find a retailer somewhere near me. Thanks for the tip! :)

EDIT:
Hm. I went to the Liquitex website and couldn't find any pearlescent colors. Probably means I just couldn't look in the right category.

However, I then stumbled upon a webshop which was on the first page of google hits and found just the right thing (it seems): Pearly glaze (Palmer Prism Acrylics). The description sounds promising: "Prism Glazes ? Translucent whites that are specially formulated for glazing, including Glitter Glaze and Pearly Glaze."

Oh, BTW, has anybody tried using artists acrylics in mini painting?
