Hi all, a bit of a weird, uncool sort of question this, but engineers just have to know things - is 'proxy' derived from 'approximate' as in 'approximate representation of (e.g.) a battlewagon'? ? ![]() ![]() |

No The definition of proxy is A person authorized to act for another; an agent or substitute. The authority to act for another. The written authorization to act in place of another. in other words "to act in place of another" it comes from the word proccy, which is derived from procracie ah the wonders of www.dictionary.com |

Whew - thanks Jimbo, looks like it has legal origins then. Er - what does procracie mean? I tried a couple of Latin online dictionaries but had no luck. |

That's becuase it was not latin, but middle English. Proccy is a contraction of earlier procracie, annual payment, from Anglo-Norman procuracie, from Medieval Latin procuratia, alteration of Latin procuratio, from procuratus, past participle of procurare, to take care of. |
