Hi Epicomms friends,

I copied and pasted this E-mail here from a forum for model RR guys, but I wanted to share the weathering advice here since it applies to us Epic guys too.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Mike and Gang,

SEALANT: I gloss coat after painting and then dull (flat) coat. Gloss coats gives a stronger barrier (thicker) and dull coats (thinner) look better.

WHEN: After the dull coat, I apply the chalk and weathering (I
sometimes use an ink or watery solution at this stage also), I put a final dull coat on.

BRUSHES FOR CHALK: I go by the Dollar Store and wait until the cheap make-up applicators appear (They look like fancy Q-tips), which will last a long time for chalk/pastel application. I can usally get 8-12 for a dollar depending on the brand. I buy two or three packages when I see them and they last me several years.

METAL WHEELS: Most chalks will stick to metal parts, but not as well as plastic and they will wear off if you don't dull coat them. Be careful dull-coating functional metal parts since the sealant can gum up your tracks and locos.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Thanks guys...

I bought the 12 color kit. Can't wait to get it and try it!
I noticed it said to be used on Non-glossy surface...
Do you use a dull coat spray prior to applying?
The second thing I read was that it didn't need any drying or
finishing time.
Do any of you still apply any type of sealer or anything to seal up loco/freight cars?
How does this stick to metal wheels?
Do you recommend using something else to weather wheels / couplers?
What types of brushes are you using for application?
Thanks in advance for the advice!
Mike.

We use artist pastels for the same thing. Slightly expensive, but the effect is great.

You are talking about paint in powder form , right?  I never even thought about trying that.  I'll have to get some.

Hi Iblisdrax,

No, not really, we're talking about chalks or pastels ground fine and applied to models... the best weathering ever!

Hmmm....yeah a model railroad guy I talked to said something about that.  Maybe I'll try it anyway.

I first learned about it when one of the better painters in the area showed me how to do it on our 15mm WWII forces for FOW. Man did it change the look.
