Hello Guys,

I was just on a website where the person was playing one set of rules and using minis from another set of rules. I realized that I did not have an issue with this when right after that I saw a post on a board where someone was spazing because they had been asked to play a game against someone else who did not have "offical" minis.

So I am curious, what the bulk of you think:

1) Do you mix your minis? Play with, say GZG Tanks as Ork vehicles etc.

2) What criteria, if any, do you use when selecting what can and can not be used?

3) Do your feeling about this change from game to game?
With Epic you never use non-GW but with Battletech you use some CAVs?

Anyway, have at it. Comments, thoughts, etc...

We use 98% G/W-F/W but there are a few other odds & ends in our forces.  As long as you and your crew agree "what is = to what" (like an OGRE = a CI), then I say go for it !

I guess that we are mostly talking about GW games here. I tend to build the bulk of my armies from GW minis, and then mix in other manufacturers later. I dont play tournaments, and I have a very limited number of opponents, and so it does not cause any problems. The easiest way to do this is to mix in infantry on a base, as it is still obvious what they are. However, APCs can take any shape or form. The most common way that I do this is to create new stats for other manufacturers minis, so that a Rhino is always a Rhino, but a Wombat APC can be almost any mini.

I also do this a lot with my Gothic stuff, and I am currently working on a new fleet (the Nebulae Alliance) which is a human mining fleet but was created just so that I had a complete fleet with all the other spaceship minis that are being produced out there. If someone has a problem with it, I just use my trusty Chaos or Eldar.

I usually prefer to stick to GW models, mainly out of fear of broadening my horizon of potential purchases - I'm reaching a fine level with GW because I'm not overloading myself any more with too many models, due to their price.
But I don't mind playing against a  mix of models, as long as I know who's who and what's what.

Hi!

I use Game master and Battletech figures in epic games quite frequently. In fact the new squat units and Slann armies are all non-GW proxies. There's a lot fo good stuff out there that is appropriate and looks good.

I'd say that about 70% of my force is GW/FW. The rest is other stuff that fits in with the feel of my force. If I think it looks good and paint it, and play test suitable rules. None of the rest of my group has any problems , and I with their varients.
It seems that GW is the ground work and the flourishes to an army are the extra finds/conversions that make every ones unique and fun.IMHO. :)
Cheers.

Too bad GW seems to have forgotten that in their "ours or no-ones" attitude.  :L

I miss the early Rogue Trader days.  :{

Good thing we have each other now, eh?

Dafrca,

1) Do you mix your minis?
Play with, say GZG Tanks as Ork vehicles etc.

I don't mind this at all. In fact, I love proxies and customized pieces.

Overall though, I feel the majority of minis in the army should come from their own line to keep armies recognizable unless it's a game like Dirtside II in which everyone is welcome to the party.

An exception would be for armies that keep the "theme" of the force they portray. For instnace, my Jopalli army is made up almost entirely of proxies because I wanted it to be unique..

2) What criteria, if any, do you use when selecting what can and can not be used?

Mainly, I like to keep the "theme" and "look" of the army being portayed.

3) Do your feeling about this change from game to game?
With Epic you never use non-GW but with Battletech you use some CAVs?

No, my feelings are pretty consistent: proxies are GOOD!

Of course, I don't use many proxies for my OGRE armies, but I haven't gotten past making core armies (Combine and Paneuros) anyway. I might when I get around to the other armies.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
Dafrca,
I love your proxy infantry.

I don't mind proxies at all. However, if I were to use them,  my aesthetics module demands that the proxies fit in with the army meaning that they must be of the same style. Confusing enough?

let's try again:
1) I would play against anything as long as I knew what it was and it was the same type of model it was supposed to represent. No Smurfs posing as superheavy tanks.

2) I would use only those proxies which look somewhat like the rest of the models in the army. To me the ol' Beetleback is the only warlord so personally I would not use DP9 gears as a substitute.

I think you have put into words what I like to do.

If someone had all GZG NAC as their IG great. As long as I can tell what they are then "let's play".

However, I would not use my Centurion mini with my IG because they do not fit the overall feel of my IG army. But I might use some with my Eldar as they have many of the same features.

I have no problem with other models (just don't happen to have any at the mo). After all any industrial hive world worth it's salt is going to come up with at least half a dozen 'variants' to tackle it's particular terrain.
