Hello here,

a while ago I decide dto paint my ships black and white. I have a problem with this changed color scheme, though: I have not a damn idea on how to make white look good :( I have tried but it either looks too white (only undercoat) or it doesn't look white at all once I apply paints (watered down grey) and other such stuff.

So I am asking for help. Does anybody know how to make white good looking? deep with some highlights (white highlights over white.... seems stupid, right?). Don't know. In general it looks mnessy when I try it. Anyone has experience with this? Thx in advance

Health and sixes,

Xavi

I water down the palest grey or blue that I have (depending on what tint I want the white to have) and wash only in the recessed areas, then I highlight with white to limit it even further.

For white I usually spray undercoat ...well: white. Then a wash of thinned Space Wolves grey or fortress grey (depending on werther I want a clear (blueish) or more dirty (brownish) white. For real depth I then apply some very thinned down Shadow grey and a slightly heavier mix to larger recessed areas. Once you are sure everything is completely dry drybrush first a layer of SW(orfortress) grey/white mix (about 1/3) then a drybrush of pure white. Finally one more drybrush of pure white.
I assume by "Ships" you mean BFG ships where drybrushing work best. There's however nothing to stop you using regular shading techniques instrad of drybrushing folowing the method above.

Cheers! :)

Thanks a lot! Greatly appreciated

Yup, by ships I mean BFG ships. I still ahve to build up my merchant marine empire  :p I don't think I will shade them, though

The thing preventing me from using "the usual shading techniques" is.... well, that I suck at painting. Not much more than that. It is one of those things that I have never learnt how to do well. I am trying, though! :D Again, thanols for the help dudes.

Cheers,

Xavi

White is one of those strange colours that should be approached as if you wanted a darker colour, and then forgot to stop highlighting. For example, a base coat of yellow/brown, or grey which is drybrushed heavily up. And remember that white is never really white, and so the actual painting stage dealing with completely white paint should be last and light.
