Post subject:  Painting eyes and other quirks

Hi all,
as I'm worked on the last half-dozen marines for my 40K tournament army, I reaffirmed one quirk of my painting activities: I always find a model's left eye easier to paint than the right eye - especially in space marines. This is most likely a question of handedness, combined with the shape of the SM helmet (although there is no one mark of armour in which this does not happen to me). Is there any left-handed painter who can indicate whether the opposite is true as well? Or is it just me? (I have a right thumb with a cut tend- sorry, a burnt-out servo, which might be another factor).
Also - any other such quirks? ?:oo

Hi!

I wonder if Tuff is left handed. He'd probably have the best insight since he probably know a few painters.

Actually I'm right handed. I used to be almost entirely ambidextrous, but I've grown into using my right hand for painting etc.

Interesting theory, but I think it may be more down to eye dominence. If I draw (which is a joke in itself as I draw like a 2 year old.. but we'll ignore that...) something thats meant to be symetrical without "planning", I almost always find it comes out lop sided.

When I painted a large Orc skull, Goblin head & various other things on my bedroom wall many years ago, someone pointed out that they were all slightly lop sided in exactly the same fashion - details such as ears and teeth on the right tended to be slightly longer & thinner than those on the left & apparently that was down to eye dominence & perception at short distance.

Whenever I paint eyes or other details on a model I now paint the right eye normally, but turn the piece upside down to do the left eye. It means I'm not relying on my other (left, slightly weaker I think)eye to see "around" the nose of the figure, but am instead still relying on my right eye (which is my dominant eye).

Just a theory......

I'll have to ask the real pros on the "masterclass miniature painters" list about this one someday!

Fascinating, Tuffskull - I usually turn models upside down to to do the right eye (but still manage the left better).
