Has anyone got any tips on painting metal to make it look grimy and rusty- I'm doing a few Necromunda bits and pieces, and they all look a little 'brand new' at the moment, so I need a few tips to give them that ancient, decaying feel...

-Any help much appreciated!  :)

Hi!

Ah good 'ol "tin bitz" from GW, I must say thats one of my favorite paints, I could never quite get a rust color better than that one.

Snakebite leather Chaos black mixed in different quantities and consistences (generally thinned down. Takes a bit of practice but I really like the result.

Cheers

Best way to get something to look rusty is to glue rust to it :p
Get a bag of old nails "the ones that rust" and put em in a jar of salt water.
Leave em for six months and they should have a thick layer of rust on them.
Dry em off and chip the rust away.
You can then glue the rusty chipings and dust to you model.
Works best on WH40K models but the rust-dust can also be used on Epic models.
Remember to vanish the rust afterwards as it will continue to corrode and fall off.

try pastel chalks sometime. ?you can get them in earth tones. ?you just scrape a bit off of the chalkstick drybrush the powder on with a soft brush and sealcote.

I used this technique on this 1/35 stuart. ?(ok it doesn't show up well in the pic but looks great in real life.)
you use this technique to do dust, rust, grime, powder flash, just about any untidy thing you want to put on your model.

..Yeah, another excellent suggestion- I was reading an old WD article a week or so ago with a DA predator, heavily converted, that used this dusting technique to add realism- looked great...

1/35 or 6mm? I've got stuff from 1/6 to 1/1200.  Though I thinned my model collection out this summer, so pickings are thin.
