Hiya all! :D

I am quite new to the 40k universe but when I decided to collect a SM fleet, something did strike me: the Battle Barge is something that I think the SM should NOT have. IMO they are based around strike cruiser operations at most, so the BB is an overkill monster there. But (and this is a very important but) we have another thing called "gaming performance" and I think that this is why GW did put the BB there.

Well, in fact, I plan to deploy a BB with my marines in a 1500 point list. What I cannot stand is:
1) The background behind a regular SM battle barge.
2) The battle barge model. it is not "Gothic" enough for my taste! :)

This is why I decided to convert one from a regular Empire Battleship, in the same way that I think I will try to build up two out of my four strike cruisers there, since a fleet of 4 strike cruisers + BB + escorts is too big for a Marine chapter IMO while it is a regular 1500 pts BFG list.

If you want to read the fluff behind it you can find it here:

here in epic40k itself :)

Well, Looking at the stats I thought about the Retribution flagship to use as my battle barge, the Gloria Imperialis.

- What I am asking here is for conversion advise. I have the thingy at home, but looking at it I find it quite difficult to convert into a suitable ship to use as a BB. I have no idea on how making it look more armoured or armed with launch bays ON THE FRONT? :/

Well, any suggestion and conversion suggestion will be greatly appreciated. In fact I could post the same topic on how to convert regular cruisers to look like rapid strike Marine cruisers, but I think I will go first one step, then the other. ;)

LOL :D

Regards,
Xavi.

Well, after spending like 3 hours looking at my Retribution class from every direction and thinking about the changes required to make it look like a Battle barge and after reading huge rants on the BFG list about ubber carriers and the like and Despoiler discussion, I ended up going the other way around: I am not bob DeAngelis so I will change the background behind the ship. Basically I LOVE the Despoiler model, so I will turn the ship they captured in Pler into a pre-despoiler design. It would have prow launch bays yadda yadda... in general it is a great model and much easier to make it look like it has battle barge weaponry in it. So there we gop, with a Despoiler being the Gloria Imperialis ;) lol

Health and a lot of sixes,

Xavi

Great idea- converting a Retribution or an Emperor to the prow launch bays idea would be quite hard I reckon, so this seems like a neat fix!

Im comfused about the comment made about the BB not looking gothic anuf.
Lookin at a wide selection of WH40k and Epic models the different style of Imperial Guard and Space Marine is quite distinct. These two styles have been carried over to B.F.G models quiet well.
I agree with Xavi, the Despoiler is the best looking chaos model to date. Theres something about that open style nose that makes it look mean }:)

..I agree with you Kr00za- the Imperial Navy stuff is very gothic, and the Space Marine stuff, is a similar design but has that certain Marine "blockyness"..

...Oh and yes, the Despoiler does rock- very mean.. pity I've sold mine now... :L

Yup, I know the BB is bulky and all that stuff and that the SM ships are more or less SM in style, so big and bulky. The thing is that to me the SM patterns do not follow the current state of technology in the 40k universe. They look too advanced for my taste there. The imperial navy and chaos ships have a gothic feeling in them and the elar and others have a characteristic look hat fits them, but in the case of the SM the ships look SM in style but do not fit the background IMO. That is what I was refering to :) Maybe now I did make a clearer statement, mabe I did mess everything up. LOL :D

Health and a lot of sixes,

Xavi

If you want a space marine bb to look more gothic, then using parts from an Imperiator Titan might work.  I dont think you can get them from GW anymore, but I'm sure you can find some around somewhere. (ebay, trades here etc)

Anyway, the model has a lot of gothic looking structures on it, that could be put onto the BB.  I know I have seen some ships that have already used them, and they look good.  Really gothic looking.  I dont have any links I'm afraid though.
