I've just finished the first Ashigaru frigate for my Hostile Stars Pax and I'm really rather pleased with it, after starting to paint without any real plan other than the basic colours I wanted to use.
None of my fleets for space games have used black as a primary colour, and I wanted to see if I could pull this off whilst still showing off the dtail and without making the ship an indistinct blob. By choosing some nice bright colours to contrast I brought key details out, and I painted a sort of abstract pattern over the prow and top surface which I hope adds interest without breaking up the shape too much.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy and I'm really looking forward to painting up a full couple of squadrons, along with some larger vessels when they arrive.

Those are fantastic. Can you post them over at the DRM boards, too?

Cheers everyone!

You do need a steady hand, but more importantly you want the paint to just flow easily off the bristles, so nice thin milky paint is vital (especially with white - I should have gone thinner with these infact and gone for even more coats to get it really smooth).
A brush with a good point is essential as well, I find licking very helpful when doing things like this, to get that perfect point!

CS; I'll pop them up on the DRM boards later, no worries.

The poor Orks are looking forlornly at me, but spaceships have captured my attention for the moment.
This is a mini I picked up at Salute a couple of months ago, one of GZG's Full Thurst Japanese ships, a Hamana Class Fleet Refuelling Tanker.

I picked this up on a whim and I'm still not really sure I like it - it certainly looks rather ungainly without its tanker modules. Once they are on I think I'll warm to it a little more, and it is giving me the chance to give a new colour scheme a bash.

The detail here is pretty good, if a little cobbled together looking for my taste, and it is ideal for drybrushing. I was less than impressed by the casting of the tanker components though, which had really bad mould lines and some nasty pitting.

Oh, and I thought I'd share this, another of my favourite things to paint to.

Starship Sofa

SS is a weekly magazine style scifi podcast, with short stories, facts, reviews and discussion. There are some excellent stories by well (and not so well)-known authors which range from light & comedic, gritty and grim, hard SF, space opera and almost enything else you could call 'SF'.

Check it out.  :;):

Finished... for now.  :;):

I'll come back and add another stripe or two and maybe some symbols & lights to this, but for now I'm calling it done - its nearly too hot to paint here in the UK at the moment!  :sigh:

Bump up from the depths - I've finished something!  :upside:

Here we go, the RT era Orks I posted before are now all done!

I do like the newer, more savage and serious style GW has taken with the Orks, but these old models just have a certain character and charm that is all too rare these days.

I love this Bad Moon Boss figure, and the opressed looking Gretchin makes a perfect companion.

The Freebooter is a odd fig, flat and very much of the 'cardboard cutout' school of sculpts! He still has that charm though, and with a new 40mm base he makes a nice centrepiece for the group.

Hope you like.
Cheers
G

still on a massive nostalgia trip here, so its more 28mm I'm afraid!

These Orcs are from one of the original Regiments Of Reknown, The Mother Crushers, led by Eza Ugezod (I love the old puntastic names)!

I much prefer figures on round bases, and am planning to bring the odd little groups of vintage figures I have together with a cohesive dungeoneering/ruined basing scheme, making them suitable for Heroquest/WHQ games as well as Mordheim.

These models are as old if not older than me, and as well as horrible layers of old paint, they had some battle damage too; the Officer figure (Eza himself) was missing the axe head. I played about blutacking various blades from my bits box on, and decided on this vicious sword blade instead of an axe; it makes the model a little more balanced imo.

I treated myself to a few of the new washes today, and I've now got these minis undercoated and the metalwork finished off; hopefully I'll finish them at the weekend!
