I've been thinking about doing some skirmish gaming with Norse Gods as some of you may have read last week. I decided to go with 40mm as the height of my god models, and have started sculpting. I've finished Odin, the All-father. Pretty heavily equipped, with his rune-spear, Gungnir, his arm-ring, Draupnir, the still-living head of the God of Wisdom, Mimir, and Huginn and Muninn, his ravens. He's accompanied by his wolves, Geri and Freki.

Hopefully I'll get time to sculpt some more soon, but this project has to take second place to paying jobs unfortunately.

Anyway, there's a pic here:
And a couple more at my website here:Website

let me know what you think,
Regards,
Reaver

Awsome

A few thoughts:

Wolf heads look a bit weird. I'm not completely sure what it is. Could be the position of the eyes. Also the snouts seem very wide, but that could just be the angle of the photo.

The wrappings on the boots could perhaps be a bit crisper.

I like the fact that you didn't make him too warrior-like; after all there should be something left for the more war specific gods. Since Odin also have king- and wizard-like properties perhaps those aspects could be enhanced a bit? Some shaman like trophies (animal parts). I'm not sure what you've done about the bear hide cloak but that's definitely one area where this mage-like aspect could be enhanced.  To look more like a king, maybe some kind of headband or something similar?

Anyway, just random thoughts: The mini looks great the way it is :)

edit:
BTW Danish cartoonist Peter Madsen has made a wonderfull series about the Norse gods. There's a few sample pages on his website: http://www.petermadsen.info/pages/vh/vh1/valhalla1.html The series spans from very cartoony and humerous style to more dramatic and scenic styles. Perhaps some of the more scenic stuff could act as inspiration for future projects?

I'd been waiting for this since you first mentioned them, and I'm not disappointed  - in fact Odin's complete collection of luggage makes him even better than I expected. And nice of you to begin with the boss too.
Grand! Will he be going into production then? My only gripe is that I'd never be able to paint him as well as he deserves. :(

They look a bit like badgers, the wolves. And you've made sure Odin is one-eyed, right? And drop the double n for the ravens. Sort of...

Lovely work!  :agree:

You're all correct, the wolves are a bit naff! I'd finished Odin and decided to rush the wolves off last night so's I could call it finished and take pictures... always a mistake!
I'll start again on the wolves and do them properly.

I'm not sure about a head-band; but there's space for it, so I'll give it a go and see how it looks.

Weirdly, this has become a controversial figure already! Over on TMP, some guy had spotted the runes on the spear which say 'giant killer'. Although he'd only spotted the 'killer' bit, and says that I've offended his religion! Oh well, can't please everyone.

Regards,
Reaver

Well, does Gungnir have runes on the shaft?  and did you point out that the runes say 'giant killer' if you actually read the entire inscription?

If it does, you have, *and* he still whines, ignore him.  He's just looking for something to whine about.

I like the old man, but agree that the wolves look off.  Wolves (at least the beasts over here in the US) are tall, leggy critters, and almost greyhound-lean.

If you're really want impressive-looking wolves, take a look at the Siberian wolves (huge puppies, stand about 4' tall at the shoulder and weigh well over 150lbs full-grown and well-fed.  A friend of mine kept a couple, and they weighed about 275lbs each (and needed to be reminded that they were at the bottom of the 'pack' on occasion).

That is looking so sweet. Nice work on the research too. :) Will we see Thor on a ten feet rod portraying him as he battles the Jormundgand?

Oh and as for the religious guy, I'm finding it very hard to see where he's getting his fuel. Sure if he was a moslem and you were sculpting Mohammad, he'd have a point, sort of at least. But I don't think portraying Odin as a warrior should be seen offensive. Heck, especially in the context that he'll be kicking giant butt. You could always translate the runes to icelandic or old norse to muffle it a bit. Though that might not fit, it's "jättedräpare" in modern Swedish and I doubt it'll be spelled shorter the aforementioned languages.

...Oops, I'll end my rant now. Great work again. Looking forwards to the other gods. :)

Very impressive work. I particularly like Odin's face. I think the wolves have been bashed a bit here, there not that bad IMO they just don't reflect the same style and realism as the Odin Character does... again IMO.

In light of the comments on this sculpt a week or so back on TMP and here, I've made a few changes. The runes have been altered, the wolves have been binned (actually, nicked by my kids!)the cloth's been sharpened a bit, and Mimir's head is now optional, and can be replaced with a shield. Any better?

Reaver
