Hi all.
seeing that the early season of 2008 seems to be a no-show for Taccomms events, judging by the response to CS' uery in the events section, I'm holding my own tale of one gamer. I'll be starting in January, as we'll probably be abroad fr a mini-holiday until the 31st. I will not have any targets other than getting a warband of 40 Ancient Germans in 28mm scale ready.
These Germans from Foundry are a Christmas pres from the wife (huzzah!), and include 20 horsemen, 7archers, 7 scouts and 6 wounded (and a small fence of severed heads). I've started cleaning them up, and am basing them on 20x20mm bases for WHAncients (or WAB, if you prefer)  as this will be the most likely chance of a game I'll get.
I've scouted around the net for info on these boys, and there are a number of tribes I could choose from. I have around half a dozn top-knotted types - too few for a Swuebi warband, as non-topknot types would be slaves. So I'll go for a Chatti or Cheruski warband with a few Swuebi in the ranks. The Cheruski would allow me to add Hermann (Arminius) to the ranks, so I might go for them.
Colours: lots of flesh, and it seems anything goes for their clothes and shields. But I'm still researching this aspect. I'm a bit relieved this historical army has relatively few painting constraints and strict details.

Anyway - 4 archers cleaned up and based, 3 more waiting.

It does seem that there will not be a BattleComms event in January. So, I will certainly be following this. Something to pass the time between PhD submission and viva?  :blues:

Gulp! Precisely! Unless they refuse my submission outright....

Anyway - Day two:
7 Archers based and undercoated, along with one scout, who is still missing the spear I have to fabricate - one of 25 or so!
I have also cleaned up and assembled the first cavalry model, again except for his spear.
A short break for a brief visit to Modica in Sicily will follow, and the thread will resume in 2008.

I'll be following it too, Van. I don't have as much spare time now as I did a year ago, but I might do a Tale of an Epic Gamer to give me a kick in the rear to get more painting done.  :p

Way to go, Dwarf :)
Meanwhile - the still spearless skirmishers have all been based.

Right - been doing a bit of reading on Suevi and Chatti and Cherusci etc. And I'll probably be going for the latter, although (topknotted hair apart) there isn't that much difference in appearance between them.
The troops I have so far all wear trousers (barring the horses) and since I have to go out and buy flesh paint, ths is what I'm doing at the moment - starting with the 7 archers.
Apparently tartan is a no-no, but checks are allowed - not brave enough yet to try this, however.

A long iverdue update - one Ancient German painted - yay! Trouble is I've shifted the content of this (and the Malta modelling competition) to the wikiwikiwikiwar blog - it's the Vanblog, in case anyone is interested, and you can see one complete Cherusci (Cheruscus?) on it.  :p
