I could have just made a simple walk out to the landscaping to pick up a few lava rocks; unfortunately I purchased these on Ebay from a seller promoting them as "ready to paint asteroids". They appeared to be pre-formed 'rocks" with a brown color or brown primer. You can imagine that I was not very pleased to find a plastic baggy of 12 actual rocks show up at my door. |

I like to create mine on photoshop and laminate them to make the borders really clear, these look good as well. I think putting them on flying stands can be more hassle than its worth. |

I am thinking of putting some on stands and leaving others without, to give an appearance of 3-D aspect in a 2-D game. |

Yup, I use similar rocks, but didnt pay for them. I live in Fife, in Scotland and have a dead volcano along the road from me. An old railway line nearby is covered in pieces of tuff/ pumice which I just collect and stick on bases for my asteroids. Its the best looking thing (and cheapest) I've found to represent them. They also come covered in burst air bubbles, so they're 'ready cratered'. Pieces of what 'they' call parrot coal which you can find on any beach where there used to be coal mining is also a good substitute. As Chris points out though, not everyone has a volcano handy, but on that note, anyone who wants to pay postage for a bunch of them, I'd be happy to collect some and send 'em to you? R |
