Well...
If the cheesy fluff about the emperor is true then the Inquisition would have been around since the first heresy the emperor dealt with which would mean when he came to power.
He's (maybe its') a paranoid bugger so I'd say quite early!

Me too. ?As a secret organisation- who would know/tell anyway? ?This is an organisation that keeps secrets from itself remember. ?In one guise or another its been around since...well since M2 I believe! 
Regarding GK founding- isnt it in the Codex Demonhunters? ?I'll have a look in the Codex when I get home tonight and check it, but I am positive that they arent a 1st Founding as well. As to when they were founded, cant recall exactly... Any other GK info required from it?

Hi!
I think the Emperor would have some kind of loyal secret police service in place since the time he unified Terra and the Sol system, but I don't think it would become the present Inquisition until there was an actual vast Imperium where such an organization is not only practical but vital.

Do you honestly believe that CIA/MI6/ASIO(Aussie equivalent)/MOSSAD etc are any different at all apart from at a superficial level?

it has to be remembered in the 1950s MI6 and the KGB were basically one organisation...
employees of MI6 usually also worked for the KGB

Grey Knights - from Critical Hit
Alone of all the Marine Chapters, the Grey Knights possess full knowledge of the terror of Chaos. Designated Chapter 666, they are the Chamber Militant of the Ordo Malleus, and the Grand Master of the Grey Knights is traditionally a member of the Inquisition. The Knights are among the most faithful of the Emperor's servants, fully the match of the Inquisition in their zeal to defeat those who would overthrow the Imperium and steal the souls of Mankind. Their bodies are rigorously trained to withstand great pain and fear. Their minds are disciplined by the thousand rituals of detestation to face the worst horrors of the warp without flinching. And their hearts are strengthened by the Emperor's faith.

I also seem to recall that they were the only chapter created in the 'mysterious' 2nd founding.
On a side not, are the Adeptus Custodes created out of the Emperors geneseed as he is in effect - there primarch?

from the Demonhunters Codex:
The GK were created in great secrecy "around the time" of the Second Founding. They were also unique because their gene seed cae form the Emperor's own flesh.
Interestingly it also says that at this time the Ordo Malleus was in its infancy, having been created after the corruption of Horus. Whether it is only that Order that was created or the whole Inquisitoin is another matter, I personally think the former.

Hi!
I think it makes sense that the ordo malleus entered existance after the Heresy since suspicion of traitors in their ranks was definitely a concern.
When was the second founding? Pre-heresy?

Second founding was immediately after the Heresy.
Inquisition was created as part of the grand scheme to stop a Heresy from ever happening again (Marine chapters cut to only 1000 men, IG Regiments denied a fleet, Inquisition created to 'keep an eye' on everyone).
I am not sure if Commisars were round Pre-Heresy but I can see them being introduced as well.

I sold all my old fluff books a year ago or more. Needed the cash to buy Epic ! I had the RT book, Astronomicon, Compendium and both Realms of Chaos books. ?The only thing I have left is the Space Hulk Campaign book, which for some reason I like ?! ?Or I'd research all of this ... ? And yes, Jimbo, back then MI6 & the KGB were "in each others knickers" !
