Post subject:  Games & Gears DZC Battle Boards

I received my G&G DZC boards about a week back so thought it might be an idea to review them for anyone interested here. They are 3D boards which are the same set up as the card tiles that some people have had for DZC for some time.

The Kickstarter: was an absolute farce. Instead of the boards being delivered in 6 months as originally promised they took 26 months. During that time Games & Gears' communications were a disgrace and frankly backers were lied to on a routine basis. I feel very sorry for the people who ordered Hellscape boards, they will not receive their boards at all. I would urge anyone planning on ordering anything from Games & Gears to proceed with caution as a result of their shockingly unprofessional behaviour throughout the episode.

The boards: There are six boards, each one 2 X 2. With six boards I have a playing surface of 6 X 4. The paint job is ok but a bit uneven and not perfect as you might expect after waiting 26 months for a product. There were also a few scuff marks, one particularly noticeable one on a grass section which was infuriating. I can't see there being too many configurations either but maybe I'm being plain stupid! That said, I can now get on to the good news! The boards are solid and beautifully detailed. It sounds bizarre but it feels pleasant to run your hands across the surface and feel the 3D texture. I'm looking forward to applying wash to really draw out the detail. The boards are held together with clips and can handle a lot of overhang over a table which is great. The boards and clips are so sturdy that I expect these to last year's if not decades!

Anyway, here's some pics...

Overview, apologies the pic isn't that sharp, I was standing on a chair and holding the camera up as high as possible to capture the whole thing!

Boards for Epic & 6mm: they work really well for 6mm which was a major worry for me after such a long wait. It was great fun getting a game in on them last week and I'm looking forward even more to getting a game in on them once I've painted them up. I'll be documenting more games in future but you can see some (some rather shoddy) pics on my recent battle report.

I'll pick this thread up again once I've painted them!

Thanks for the review - I was on the KS too, and got my fantasy boards (I can't remember what they called them!) - quite nice, and you're right about the texture. They did take long, but I'm regretting not having gotten the DZC boards too.

Also they pulled some dodgy crap about them being painted as well. The final product does look pretty good though I'm actually thinking I'd like to use those mdf boards from down under.

Looking forward to seeing those painted up, Bissler!

The roads are painted, that was the big deal that they were making. The lines are a bit uneven in places and don't match up exactly in some sections. They would have been better not to crow about the painting it has to be said!

You're being far too kind for the insane monkeys on acid throwing paint around. Be glad you didn't get those anime boards with the hazard stripes [shudders]. They largely sold them on the supposedly top notch effects and then do something worse than just being plastic. The Dakka thread on this has some seriously entertaining horror stories.

Someone on my Irish trading group was offering out two of these, and I was wondering where they came from, as a set of these would be awesome to house all my terrain, as I am now board less.

How ever, your complaints against the company sounds bad and a bit off putting, so I wont be looking in to them more now.

Otherwise I'd snapped the two up and then order more direct.
