They're pretty damn cheap too. $5 a unit is very doable if you buy and bulk and sell off what you don't need.

The trick is buying stuff in big lots, and selling off what you don't need/want. The initial investment is higher but you get some of it back.

Those MoW bases look good. My only criticism would be that they might get in the way when ramming (intentional or otherwise.) Occasionally, you can't turn quite in time...

The idea behind them is that all measurements are to the base, rather than to the model. So ramming is just base to base.

Doesn't that make your ships larger targets though? Or give you a firing advantage?

Yes to the first. On the second, the only advantage I can think of is that your ships are a little wider so when firing both broadsides you might be able to hit two things where ships without bases might only be able to hit one. At the end of the day it's, at most, a 1/2" advantage that is probably countered by being a larger target.

I just wanted something to make them easier to transport and move around on the table, so I went with the unofficial bases sizes that are up on the Sea of Claws.

That's cool - I was thinking about basing after I saw the Dreadfleet bases, but I didn't want to inadvertently base for advantage or anything.

Carry on, sir - I look forward to seeing the final result!

Work continues on the Dwarves. I finished cleaning up the half-naked Troll Slayers this week. These will be a hoot to paint, maybe I can try for some tattoos on them.

Image

Also, this is my "Dragon Slayer" hero. The idea is that he'll be being "held back" by his two minders until he's allowed to jump in the fray (the other dwarves get upset when he kills everything before they can get a chance).

Image

And this in my Rune Priest, sans anvil. Just some weapon swaps here.

Image

I also managed to finish building my artillery. I learned from the High Elf bolt throwers that it'll be easier to paint the crew on the base, base it and then add the cannon on later.

Image

Same goes for the Flame Cannons. These came with an extra bit that looked like one of Wile E. Coyote's Acme dynamite detonators. I have no idea where it was supposed to go (even after looking at pics of the 28mm Flame Cannon) so I left it off.

Image

Finally, the Gyrocopters are all set as well. I used clear acrylic rods to base them.

Image

Also, a bit of progress on the MoW stuff. I tried out my Iron Fist conversion using a War Galley. It still needs some putty work but I think it looks a lot better than the stock one. I also got a type cog out of the deal too!

It's not a proper Slayer without tattoos. ;D

The Dwarves are now all primed up and ready for some paint (I'm leaning towards a light grey and blue scheme). I'll either be embarking down that road next or painting up the MoW Empire fleet. Not sure which as of yet.

Image

As with my Elf command strips I did a little bit of conversion on the banners. A friend at my FLGS gave me some Warhammer Dwarf shield icons and I turned them into banner tops.

I started in on the Dwarf Rangers this week. I got basecoats for their flesh and hair done, as well as a wash on both of those. These guys are pretty much all beard so that's a bit more painting than it sounds like.

Image

Before I highlight these I think I'm going to work on the armor and clothing first, as the beards are higher up. Doing it the other way around will just make for more touch-up work.

I got the metal basecoated and washed this week, next week I'll be highlighting it and putting down the basecoat for the cloth and maybe the leather/wood.

Image

Question for people, under what I'm taking to be the breast plate there's a small raised line. What do people think it is, part of the armor or a belt?
