I finally got the time to whip out the airbrush and basecoat the remainder of this force (well, except one set of rat swarms who are still tentatively due to be bred). L to R - Screaming bell, 2 units of rat ogres, a unit of Jezzails, and two units or Clanrats.

I also managed to get a unit of clanrats finished except for the flock yesterday while I waited for my Necromunda game.

Get these out of the way, and move on to Completing the Vanaheim.

You're planning on painting that all before Adepticon. :eh

Edit: Hey CS, where'd the rock smiley go? The one raising his eyebrow repeatedly?

Edit 2: Hoooray for CS!

That unit took about an hour of brush time. It's almost all drybrushing, with some detail and an ink wash on the metal. I should have all that done in a week. I'm far more worried about my Vanaheim; I've got about 1K left to paint and it's a far more time comsuming color scheme.

To give an idea of the actual time it takes to paint these guys up, and to make things move as quickly as possible, I've decided to assembly line paint the remainder of these guys and make notes of the time it takes. Call it a motivational tool.

So, I've got 6 stands of Rat Ogres, 6 Stands of Clanrats, 4 stands of Jezzails (I have no idea where the spare stand came from, but I'll get it painted anyway), a Grey Seer (I've got a different hero painted up as a GS right now, I don't know why), and the Screaming Bell (the crew are already painted). Sometimes I feel like I go overboard on parenthetic remarks.

After basecoating in Charadon Granite, the first step is to do a heavy drybrush of Graveyard Earth:
Image
Time: 35min.

Next a lighter drybrush of Kommando Khaki:
Image
Time: 20min.

The last step I did today was to Brybrush the cloth Bestial Brown. The Grey Seer got a drybrush of Codex Grey followed by another of Fortress Grey:
Image
Time: 35min.

Total painting time so far: 1hr 30min.

To do - Drybrush Snakebite Leather on wood, drybrush Boltgun Metal on metals, wash metals with Brown Inks, and do details: banners, bone, wounds, warpstone and poison wind globes.

Rat Breeding Test #1 went badly; the material for their bed seperated and part of it stuck to them as they got out of it, requiring some time to pick out of their fur. In the absence of proper materials to make tiny memory foam beds I'll likely postpone the project indefinitely. If I decide to buy extra rats later I may take it up again, but I don't have the spare time to do the job properly at this point.

Continuing, with a game scheduled for Thursday; I'd like to have them done except flocking by then.

Snakebite Leather Drybrush on wood:
Image
Time: 30min

Boltgun Metal Overbrush on metals:
Image
Time: 40min

Brown Ink wash on metals:
Image
Time: 20min. The bell is a little too dark, I'll drybrush it back up once the ink dries.

Total Time so far: 3 hours.

Remaining: Knarloc Green ground and bases, detail (banners, wounds, eyes, poison wind globes, etc.).

All right, I'll split this into a few posts - lots of pics.

Knorloc green bases:
Image
TIme: 50min

Screaming Bell got a drybrush of Boltgun Metal on the bell, followed by a drybrush of Chainmail (I think, could have been Mithril Silver). Then it and the Jezzails went through Final assembly:
Image
Time: 25min

Banners, teeth, wounds, and bone got painted Bleached bone:
Image
Time: 1hr 20min

Banners were detailed in Red Gore. Eyes and mouths on the Rat Ogre got the same. The Ogres then got highlighted in the same areas with Blood Red. Only the Red Gore is finished in this pic.
Image
Time: Red Gore: 20 min, Blood Red: 10min

Then I painted the Warpstone. It's useless to seperate out into steps; it basically Orkhide shade basecoat followed by streaks of Scorpion Green alternated with glazes of Dark Angels Green.
Image
Time: 10min

I then painted the wounds; Red and Chestnut Inks alternated with overbrushes of Bleached Bone. While I waited for the inks to dry I did final assembly. Sorry about the blurred pic.
Image
Time: 30min.

Finally I edged the bases in Chaos Black. Time: 10min. Final Pics in next post. Total Elapsed time: 6hr 55min for six units, a character, and an extra stand.

Now for unit by unit pics.

Jezzails:

Clanrats:

Rat Ogres:

Grey Seer:

And the money shot. I need to get that last unit of Rat Swarms painted up, but that's a really quick unit since it is almost no details.

Everything behind the Jezzails is not used in my 2k list.

Edit: Flocking the bases will happen eventually, but probably not in time for A-Con.

Cool. Will you go back and give the rats a flesh tone for faces etc?

Nope. Real rats have shorter, but not noticably thinner or differently colored, hair on their muzzles. As a propanent of the idea that Skaven are mutated from rats instead of humans, I'll be sticking with a moderately realistic fur pattern.

Gotcha. No worries, just thought the colour scheme might benefit from a contrasting colour - at least on the ears.

I love a good swarm :)
