Hey guys,

This past weekend I played some more WWI dreadnought action.

In this battle The German battlecruiser Goeben and her light cruiser escort, Breslau, was runnning east to escape the British. ?But this time they were not alone. ?The Austrian navy has sailed form it's ports with 3 pre dreadnoughts, 3 light cruisers, a destroyer screen. ?

But this time the 4 British armored cruisers were not alone either. ?The French, yes they had a navy, sailed 3 of their battleships and a destroyer screen to help them. ?As the case turned out to die for them.

We were playing blind for first few turns. ?But the Austrians and the Germans found each other. ?Then we spotted the French behind us. ?Through "inteligence," i.e gamer talk at the table, we figured out the Brits were in front of us.

So we turned the formation 180 and charged straight into the French. ?So the French ?had to face our full might while the Brits struggled to catach up. ?Considering the batlle was moving away from them only 3 knots slower than the Brits could move it was going to be a long battle for the French.

The first action saw our respective destroyer flotillas go after the main ships of each fleet. ?While the French launched many torpedos they all failed to hit. ?Then the French destroyers were all sent ot the bottom when the large warships turned their secondary batteries on them. ?Destroyers being hit by a 8" shell makes a big boom. ?

My destroyers did a little better. ?We were able to launch two torpedo attacks one of which hit and caused flooding on a French battleship. ?

I lose one destroyer flotilla when three Battleships decided to turn all their guns on my destroyers. ?Destroyers being hit by a 12" gun makes a bigger boom. ? :D

The second torpedo attack failed and that destroyer formation quicky wihdrew after they did their job for the Kaiser.

After all that excitment the 4 Austrain/German ships began pounding on the French battleships. ?The 11" guns og theGerman battlecruiser, better than the 12" guns on the French ships, were really making a difference. ?While it took a good while, two French battle ships were crippled. ?One was taking in water and ulitmately sunk. ?The other ended up as a floating wreack on fire. ?They were not going down alone. ?

The French seemed more dangerous when the end was near. ?Their ships managed a killer blow on one of the Austrian battleships when her magazine exploded.

Thats right folks I have played this game about five to six times and I have had four ships under my command blown sky high. ?Tas never get on a ship with me at command. ?:D

While tragic for the Austrian navy the writting was still on the wall the French ships had simply taken too much. ?

Seeing how good it felt to blow ships up the French player turned it's last shots onto my light cruisers which had moved in close for a torpedo strike. ?One turn after another I saw the light cruisers get gutted and sent to the botttom by the firepower of the French battleships.

This reinforced my view of never, never, bring a knife to a gun fight. ?

With the last salvos the central powers ships left the French behind and moved to engae the British. ?They were leaving behind two cripplied French battleships and one lagging far behind with a torpedo whole in her side. ?The last French ship was traveling at 5 knots and could not keep up with the fight. ?Along with them was a debris of one Austrian Battleship and many smaller ships.

By this time the British had finally entered the gun range. ?
There was many wise cracks about how they British were fighting this battle to the last Frenchman. ?:p

So now the 2 remaining Austrain battleships and the German Battlecruiser turned it's guns onto the British Armored Cruisers.

The HMS Defence, who was point man for this task force, became covered by splashes and explosions. ?Two turns later the Defence was in serious jeopardy of being engulfed in flames. ?She was dropping out of the British line and we were about turn on the next target when we called the game for time. ?

Overall the results were

Austrian/German Navy:
BC Goeben (light Damage)
BB Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand (light Damage)
BB Radetzky (Lost at Sea)
BB Zrinyi (light Damage)

CL Breslau (Lost at Sea)
CS Saida (Lost at Sea)
CS Helgoland (Lost at Sea)
CS Novra (Lost at Sea)

4 of 8 Destroyers lost at Sea

French:
BB Diderot (Dead in the Water on fire)
BB Danton (Heavy damage)
BB Condorcet (Dead in the water sinking) ?

8 of 8 Destroyers lost at sea

British:
CR Defense (Heavy Damage)
CR Warrior (No damage)
CR Duke of Edinburgh (No damage)
CR Black Prince (No damage)

There you go guys. Hope you liked the briefing

We will be running this scenario at the local CON next month. ?We will start the British closer to the fight.

Great report Luis - thanks!
I was wondering if you were still playing this genre.  Have you got any more photos of your fleet?

Sounds like you are learning the roles of the various ships well - Cruisers screen battleships from destroyers, but can mob up to take on a crippled capital ship.  Dont do it otherwise!  BTW The introduction of guided missiles and the ability for smaller shps to take on larger ships caused a revolution similar to the one caused by the introduction of the torpedo and the rise of torpedo boats.

Tas never get on a ship with me at command.

Aye Aye Sir! :D

Hey, I know that feeling.  Except in my case, it was the Yamato dropping exactly one 18.1" shell on a Fletcher-class.  blub, blub, says the DD.  3500-pound shells at long range do horrible things to light (correction, ANY armor).
