My friend got into Flames of war and he is doing a Soviet Guard Tank army. As a treat I painted up a 15mm P39 for his airpower. He didn't have the army points for a Shturmovik, but I think this will be just as good. I just took a few quick shots before I gave it away... my P47 is sitting on the shelf.

The bottom of the plane. Showing magnet attachment and bomb details. The slightly ugly part is repaired AA damage and not where Louie had to rip of the first placment of the magnet, yeah thats it!  Well I tried...

The base detail. His army is entirely based on the Russian spring thaw...i.e. Mud and yuck and lots of it. So I did the plane base to match. |

WOW !!! Very Nice ! More P-39s were used by the USSR then the USA, IIRC ?! But an interesting historical note. My Mom, worked on the P-39s, she was a welder/riveter. She was what US history calls a " Rosy the Riveter" ! So my Dad was an Inf SGT in WWII and my Mom built P-39s ... My history note for today ! Again, great work, C/C - FlyBoy !

Luis, I've been thinking all week about the magnetic base you used on this P39. ?Intiall I was thinking about a solution for the diecast Hueys I have for my 15mm marines, but had discarded it. ? But of course, the better application would be...for Aeronefs! Can you please provide me with more details of this clever pole basing method? thanks! |

Ok Tas here it is. The base is a large plastic GW flight base. The center hole has been drilled out a little larger to account for the brass rod that I used as the stem. The brass rod is about 4mm in diameter. I cut the brass rod to the proper length using a cheap little Testor's tube cutter. Tube cutter It is a great little tool that is cheap and easy to use. I picked it up and the brass rod from my local model store. I glue the rod into the flight base uisng Zap-a-Gap. The product I generally use on all my minis. I never felt the need use to super glue. Zap-a-gap The hardest thing is holding the rod staright (maybe a minute) so it comes out looking right. In this case I had to sand the brass rod a bit on the bottom to make the base lie flat on the surface. It stuck out just a little. Ok once the rod is firmly in place I sand the top of the brass rod to ensure it's a level surface. I stuff a little paper into the center just to give the zap-a-gap more surface area. Also that way the glue doesn't run staight down the tube and glues the base onto the tabel. Of course that has never happen to me.   Before all the magents get glued I marked each magnet to indicate the side that gets glued onto the stand/plane surface. A "This end up" kind of marker for each magnet. Usually I do this when both are attached to each other then mark the outsides. If I were to do a fleet I would create a "marker" flight stand. This way any flight stand will work with any ship or nef in the fleet because all the magnets would be orientated the same way. I glue the magnet onto the rod. While that is drying I turn to he plane. I find a nice flat area and glue the opposing magnet. I let both sit for 24 hours. Unitl the glue to throughly dried the magnets are stong enough to rip one the oppsoing surface. The next day when you return you will be able to match your neff with your flight stand and your find that the magents stay on their respective mini objects. The magnets used on this plane I picked up at the local hobby store. The label reads... "The Magnet Source" Neodymium Magnet .197 diamter (5mm) ND022N-35" Here is a nice article from another website that also has a link to one source. Magnet article All done. I hope that helps -Lou |

My one game with the magnets was that WWI game I had pics of here at the fourm. Thats was my first pratical test case. I found the magnets to be very strong and more than capable of taking the gaming abuse. That game concinved me to use magenets on all my games Space and Air. |
