I was having a rules dicussion and needed to show am example. I was right you can place smoke how you want under the template in FOW.

Certainly the way we play it, you place it how you want, but not overlapping where possible.
1 token for each gun & one more for each gun for the drift (placement dependant on wind direction.
To be honest, its been a long time since I read the book, so this may not be standard, but it works for us!

It was clear from the FOW forum thay you may place the intial Smoke markers any where within the template.
