I've recently read the FoW rules, and I really liked them—not as deep as E:A, say, but certainly a big step up from the WH40K rules.

The WW2 setting doesn't grab me like 40K, though, so I'm wondering...and I realise this may be sacreligeous...but has anyone tried converting a 40K Codex for use in FoW? :)

I cant believe that this has not been at least attempted.... this kind of thing usually hides out in the Yahoo Groups. Have you checked there?

I've googled 'til my fingers bled...nothing.

I found it similarly hard to believe no one had tried it, though, and I was kinda hoping someone here would have an answer for me. :)

Did you get blood on the keyboard? Be careful you might summon a Daemon. =)

Crossfire might be a nice way of using GW40k figures, particularly if you have a lot of terrain.

http://crossfire.wargaming.info/

From the intro:
Quote:
At Historicon in 1995 a friend challenged me to design a historical miniatures wargame that lacked two features present in most rulesets: rulers and fixed game turns. The result is Crossfire - a fast-paced simulation of shifting tactical initiative, where the action unfolds like a film highlighting the critical events of a battle. Crossfire offers the player dozens of critical decisions to make every game, and each one may decide the battle.

Crossfire focuses on company-level, infantry operations by stressing three interrelated features: movement, firepower, and terrain. It assumes the tabletop action is occurring well within the effective ranges of WW-II small arms. By stressing these fundamentals, player commanders in Crossfire are encouraged to use covered terrain routes for troop movements, and establish fire bases that both support their own movements and interdict those of the enemy. Variable troop quality and national command & control differences modify these fundamentals. These conflicting tactical concerns will challenge the best gamers in our hobby. And because these concerns were paramount in the minds of real commanders, I believe Crossfire also succeeds as a simulation, in spite of its abstractions.

We have included a Scenario Generation system which enables gamers to simulate typical combat problems with an infinite number of outcomes; tournaments may be played with this method. One specific scenario has been added showing how to design games based on historical actions. We will be releasing a book of such scenarios in the future.

The average Crossfire game can be played quickly with about 40, 15mm or 20mm figures on a side and perhaps a vehicle or two, and the game works equally well at any figure scale. Rebasing is not required.

There's a pretty comprehensive review at

I can promise you it'd be a novel experience.

Being familar with the FOW rules the hardest thing to mimic would be the infantry armor.

I imagine that infantry in heavy enough armor could be considered in bullet proof cover. This would require the weapon to pass a fire power test to kill the stand.

This would make Marines, for example, almost immune to rifle and light artillery fire. Is that accurate for power armor?

Also, the fire power test is required or it isn't. There is no distinction between 6+, 5+, or 4+ types of armor.

I guess one can modify the firepower test based on armor type but that is another level of complexity.

Yeah, that same thought occurred to me. I was thinking you'd just treat Power Armoured troopers as light vehicles. For Terminators, maybe you would need to fail the test twice to kill the unit, or even treat it as heavy armour?

Obviously, the points cost would need to be commensurate with something so totally bad-ass, so you'd probably end up with a ratio of 1 Space Marine to every 10 normal humans, or 1 Terminator to every 20 normals...but, then again, I've always thought the WH40K rules failed precisely because the Marines-to-Humans ratio _wasn't_ in the order of 1:10. In that context, treating Marines as you would light vehicles makes perfect sense. :)

What do you think? Could it work?

Treating 1 Marine on a base as equivilent to a standard 5-6 man squad on a base would be a good start, then!

Actually, i'd like to play Epic with FOW minis :)

There are Epic rules for WW2 units around the traps. Haven't tried them yet, but they look pretty reasonable.

I've seen them, hardly any commands for Germans and US. Plus they do not accurately reflect the units IMHO.

Guard, Lost and Damned and Orks would be easy. IG are bog standard human infantry like everything in FoW. Orks would IMO be fearless conscript with the russian 'quality of quantity' rule, mainly short ranged weapons and hit on 3+ in assault. L&D would be somewhere in between.

Marines are a bit harder. How about these special rules:
'Superhumans': All Space marines are based individually on a small base.
'Power armour': Requires firepower test to kill.
'And they shall know no fear': Re-roll failed morale tests.
'Mission tactics'
'Tactical Dreadnaught armour': Terminators counts as vehicles with armour value 0/0/0, 'Very slow' and 'Battlesuit'.

General special rule: 'Battlesuit': Vehicles with this rule may assault other vehicles and may NOT be bailed out.
'Skimmer': Auto-pass bog down tests.

As for the saves, I'd say that 6+ should be standard infantry, possibly 5+ as well. 4+ could have an extra 6+ save against weapons with FP 6. Above that we're talking .50 machineguns-20mm cannon which I'd consider AP4 in 40K terms.
