i've played a few games now, and to be honest, not that impressed, the army lists tend not to be as interesting as they first appeared, and it played quite slowly, even with most of the rules under our belts.

i'll probably play more wab, but no more FoG

regards

jim

Hi Jim

What armies were you using & who was opponent? After tring Flames of War and enjoying it, I was hoping that Field of Glory would do the same for Ancients and become a unifying ruleset. However the feedback since the hype was followed by the launch has been less overwhelming.

I think WAB suffers because of it's part time support from GW staff often having to concentrate on their day job. But other than that I like WAB.

I have some of Warlord Games new plastic 28mm Imperial Romans and a couple of blisters of the metal auxiliaries. It sounds like I will have to base them up for WAB and forget trying Field of Glory.

Cheers

James

It's nice that the rules support more BASES than DBx, since a total of 12 stands just doesn't look like an army.  I play skirmish games with a higher 'element' count than that!  There's a good case for an army consisting of somewhere in the neighborhood of 36-48 bases, with 4 28mm figures per base (8 or more, if you use 15mm).

Note that only the quick play DBA rules have 12 bases.

DBMM are the big battle sets that have 50+ bases.

The rules (FOG & DBX) have the same number of figures per base in 15mm and 25mm, but you use more figures per base in 6mm.

DBMM > FOG > WAB

My personal opinion. :;):

FOG and WAB have prettier marketing than DBMM.

WAB has more flaws in rules and points systems than either and isn't really a set for history buffs. It strikes me more of a set for Warhammer players who think "Romans are cool!" after watching gladiator or something.

FOG should have been the killer set, but it just didn't do it for me. Barbarians walking around in tidy units in FOG same as WAB just doesn't feel right, plus FOG has as many superfluous combat mechanics as WAB.

hi james,

it was mostly my 20mm ancient brits against romans, against an old college buddy from the midlands. although we played a couple of barbarian against barbarian match ups too, just to see how equal armies did.

the romans won every game against celts  :_(

neither of us found them as much fun as WAB sadly. It might still be that we are still fairly new, but i don't think that's it, the speed and feel didn't do it for me.

I had the same high hopes, it's high time someone managed the FOW feel for ancients.

regards

jim
