So, having listened to the latest Worlds End radio podcast, which does an in depth review of WoTR, I have to say it sounds like a very interesting game. Anyone out there playing it? Maybe I won't ebay that box of Rohirrim I impulse bought quite some time ago! |

I had my first game of WotR last Sunday. Coincidently it was with Matt Shadowlord from the podcast (and 5 other players). We had a blast and I think that I prefer it to LotR SBG (which I have played for several years). The Rohirrim charge was amazing and having rolled several 6's for unstoppable charges, I cleaned up an Isengard army quite quickly (something that is not really possible with the Strategy Battle Game). Combat was quick and deadly. Such large armies always look good. ![]() LINK to more photos and a useful site for more info (The Last Alliance). All up, great fun and I recommend you give it a go before deciding to sell your Horse Lords. |

I'm not a fan. The game is decided by wacky combos of named characters calling the 'Epic Duel' action and slaughtering 20 enemies single-handedly, it's not uncommon to remove 20/30 individual models after a single round of combat, most named characters are far too cheap for their abilities, and it requires a literal bucket of dice to play a game with. |

Did you see the movies...? ![]() Honestly, I don't remember killing 20/30 models with my Epic Duels (maybe 5/8 at most) but I only did about 4 or 5 duels in a game.. You are right about the number of dice though. E&C, have you played it (or the Strategy Battle Game) yourself or just watched a game/heard about it? I have to say that I play LotR (both types) because of a deep love of Middle Earth, whilst I play Epic because I believe it is the best system I know. |

E&C, have you played it (or the Strategy Battle Game) yourself or just watched a game/heard about it? I've played a couple of games of WOTR, and probably ten SBG games. WOTR strikes me as being influenced by two of GW's Core games design themes: - The game should primarily be Strategy based, not Tactics based. - The game should feature huge numbers of miniatures and very high kill rates. The overall balance of the game system is tenuous at best, it is certainly not a game system that could stand up to tournament play without falling apart under the strain of min/max combos. It's a great game for some, but it's not my cup of boiled leaves ; I prefer the SBG's playstyle to be honest. |

Hmm, I really must get a dice bucket one day for games like this! |

I'm not sure how easy it will be to switch seamlessly back and forward between LOTR SBG and WOTR. In between different points costs and different stats for the same figures I think it will be confusing to play both games. I like SBG for the smaller games where more scenario driven. One of my regular opponents is similarly into the scenario side and we have had some good fun games. We have talked about tring to do some larger battles, maybe over a weekend, and try to recreate some of the scenes from movies susch as Helm's Deep or Pelennor Fields. Maybe WOTR will do for those larger games or if not maybe just play SBG with some extra rules inspired by WOTR. Cheers James |
