I disagree about the viability of Confrontation as a pre-paint game. Something that was mentioned on Warseer, and I agree, is that fantasy games are inherantly about heroes and personalities. Pre-paints just dont appeal to the same market.
But thing is the typical miniatures crowd isn't their market. There is not much money in going after the same small group. The "ready to play" or pre-painted models are targeted towards those who don't have time or interest to paint, a much larger audience than those of us who love painting and amassing thousands of unpainted figures.
Another reason for the change is that they have thousands of SKU's. Way too many for a store to stock it all, with average sales. 15 different army factions and hundreds of different models are too much in the already tight niche miniatures market.
They need new blood to survive and their placing their future on the mass appeal over niche market.
